Story
"I'll tell you something, something important. Love is a decision. Not a feeling. That's what you young people don't realise. That's why you're always off divorcing each other. No offence, dear." So decrees the formidable Connie Thrum of Scribbly Gum Island. She is the chief decision-maker of a rather unconventional family and her word is law. It's been over seventy years since Connie and her sister Rose visited their neighbours and found the kettle boiling and a baby waking for her feed, but no sign of her parents.

Story
Three sisters, one birthday, one little problem... The three Kettle sisters have had a mortifying mishap. Their raucous, champagne-soaked birthday dinner has come to an abrupt end following a violent argument and an emergency dash to the hospital. So who started it this time? Was it angry, hurt Cat, still recovering from the 'night of the spaghetti'? Was it Lyn, so serenely successful, at least on the outside? Or was it quirky, dreamy Gemma, the sister who can't keep a secret except for the most important one of all?

What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself. It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now that they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
- By MrsFiddleback on 29-05-09
Summary
This wonderfully perceptive new audiobook is about the lines we'll cross for love. It's about the murky areas between right and wrong, and the complexities of modern relationships.
The Hypnotist's Love Story is about the mild craziness that lurks behind the facades we present to the world, especially when it comes to love.
Ellen O'Farrell is an expert when it comes to human frailties. She's a hypnotherapist who helps her clients deal with everything from addictions to life-long phobias. So when she falls in love with a man who is being stalked by his ex-girlfriend she's more intrigued than frightened. What makes a supposedly smart, professional woman behave this way? She'd love to meet her!
What she doesn't know is that she already has. Saskia has been masquerading as a client, and their lives are set to collide in ways Ellen could never have predicted.

Brilliant
Where does The Hypnotist's Love Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best, everytime I had to pause my Ipod, I did so reluctantly! It was quite a fast pace and I always wanted to listen more to find out what would happen next.
What did you like best about this story?
It was interesting throughout. Each of the characters were different. Some of the lines made me laugh out loud. The storyline was excellent and just when you think you know what's going to happen next, it takes a different turn.
Which character – as performed by Caroline Lee – was your favourite?
Both were good.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Don't want to give anything away, but I finally felt sorry for Saskia and was glad when she found that there was life after a failed relationship and other people actually liked her!
Any additional comments?
Have listened to and loved each of Liane Moriartys books that have been available to download through 'Audible' I have listened to them all and am disappointed that there are no more. I think she has written more, but some are not on 'Audible' Liane Moriarty is very witty, sometimes her characters come out with some hilarious comments. The different personalities are very intriguing, and others can remind you of somebody you know. Her books are a must for women in their 30s, 40s + 50+ Liane Moriarty really brings the personalities to the fore and she certainly knows how womens minds work.

Where does The Hypnotist's Love Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It was surprisingly good and well researched.
Any additional comments?
Liane Moriarty is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. I really enjoyed this book, as I did 'The Husband's Secret' and, as I am doing with 'What Alice Forgot'. They are all different, easy reads, intelligently written with well drawn characters.

My first dissapointing read by Lianr Moriarty
This the fourth book I have listened to by this author, and was disappointed. The story line was most dragged out and could have been finished in less time.
Perhaps this was because it was one of her earlier works.
I loved the latest "Little Lies"

It is quite unique

Her voice varied slightly between the two main female characters.

Saskia reflecting on her relationship with hew step -son before it was cut short.

Great to begin with but sadly that didn't last.
Would you try another book written by Liane Moriarty or narrated by Caroline Lee?
I would on both counts
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed the first 1/3 to half of the book but after that it was as if the writer ran out of story. I thought at one point that the book had come to an abrupt end but then saw I had over 3 hours to go so smiled to myself and waited for the twist that must be coming. Nothing came. Just a 3 hour very long winded end.Real shame.

Credible and very well observed characters.
Would you listen to The Hypnotist's Love Story again? Why?
This book has the ability to enthrall and grip from the very beginning. As a Hypnotherapist I approached it with some misgivings, but enjoyed another book from this author so gave it a go. The story has real credibility and unlike many others it does not gloss over real issues and leave you feeling that it could never happen to real people. The emotional responses are totally believable and very well observed.
I am not crazy about the narrator but she does a good enough job on this, although she does "grate" on me a little.
What did you like best about this story?
I felt that the Hypnosis elements were well researched and totally credible. Good story.
What aspect of Caroline Lee’s performance might you have changed?
Its difficult to explain her shortcomings, as this is a very subjective view, but I do find her voice a tad grating.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No, but I did enjoy the emotional challenges.

Liane at her best.
I've listened to all of the Liane Moriarty books available on Audible and, next to What Alice Forgot, this is my favourite.
Seemingly simply lives entwine to create this wonderful story. That's the beauty - it's so believable. The relationship between the key characters unfolds at a tantalising pace. I didn't want it to end !!!!!

Entrancing, mind- shifting!
What made the experience of listening to The Hypnotist's Love Story the most enjoyable?
The character development is exquisite and I came to love all the main characters even the "bad" ones. Such a balanced view on each drew me into each twist and turn and finding myself with divided loyalty.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved both leading ladies actually, but it think the hypnotherapist wins out.
What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Caroline Lee allows one to savour the beautiful, lyrical nature of the writing and fully absorb the characters without rushing to keep up with the action.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending was realistic and yet serendipitous, love those endings.

Marvellously original characters
Ellen, the central character of this delightful, funny and elegant story, is refreshingly different. Caught in a relentless self-awareness that therapists must find so hard to shrug off, she is charming, disarming and sometimes very funny. Here are people who, like so many of us, try to live good and careful lives, but run adrift without really knowing why. But Ellen collects herself and presses on, finding a way through with her mix of philosophy, restraint and willingness. The very wholesomeness of her expectations keeps us taught with fear of their failure.
The stalker in this story, Ellen's opposite, is skilfully and compassionately drawn and remarkably real and familiar to us as readers. Who among us has not been at least some way down the path of the stalker? We are taken into her world of pain and injustice but not left to find our own way out.
Many levels of emotion, humour and philosophical exploration in this clean, gracious story,

Very enjoyable
Liane Moriarty is one of my favourite authors. Her characters are believable with understandable moods, motivations, and actions. They are real people who find themselves dealing with an unusual situation. Caroline Lee's narration is pragmatic and well paced so she is a perfect match for the book. The story line is quirky and interesting. It may not be gripping but the story develops at a good pace so it is always easy to listen to. I smiled and laughed as I listened and felt sad but satisfied when it ended.

Turned out to be quite light-hearted
Taking into account that my only encounter with Liane Moriarty had been just BBL TV series, I was happy to discover that this one wasn’t that intense and no domestic violence was involved (if you are like me and sometimes just want a mental getaway from the hardships of the world, I think it’s good to know that it’s not that kind of a book).
It was dragging at times, and going through the first chapter I thought “do I really need to hear all that inner dialogue of the heroine?”. Then, it got better.
I liked all things connected to hypnotherapy. Somehow could relate to the antagonist and liked her arc, as well as how it was intertwined with the main character’s one.
I got what I expected - some romance, some suspense, good help with going to sleep - not too gripping a book to become an all-nighter, and not too boring one to switch to something else.

The Hypnotist's Love Story
A really good story, beautifully written by Liane Moriarty and wonderfully read by Caroline Lee.

This was truly boring
I waited for the book to start, but it never did. Then it ended. Thankfully.

Interesting save the repeated self-talk
If you could sum up The Hypnotist's Love Story in three words, what would they be?
The human condition
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hypnotist's Love Story?
The moment the stalker ex is in their bedroom. She is hard to sympathize with until you get the whole picture.
Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The fact we are in the minds of more than one character means we are seeing the world through their own lens - a good approach for this type of story. The truth is there are different perspectives on love, loss, and life and even on the reasons there is a relationship struggle. Each character's lens differs from that of another player when describing the same event. It allows us to do what we are loath to do: consider all sides of an issue we may be facing too.
It is a book about family, how precious family history is within the context of community. It is also about the impact and longevity of the written word
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nothing - she is fantastic. My only problem was that the book I listened to before this one was also narrated by her, but the shift to a different story did not cause concerns, attesting to her strength of characterizations.
Any additional comments?
This is a story for someone wanting to reflect on the promises we make and break in relationships, and how a loss of a partner can leave the survivor with a sense of responsibility all out of proportion. Or does it? It asks some tough questions and even answers some of them. It is a book worth exploring in a book club or with those willing to reflect on these characters and life more generally.
