About this listen

The House on Cold Hill is a chilling and suspenseful ghost story from the multi-million copy bestselling author of the award-winning Grace series, Peter James.

Evil isn't born, it's built . . .

Moving from the heart of the city to the Sussex countryside is a big undertaking for born townies, Ollie Harcourt, his wife, Caro, and their twelve-year-old daughter, Jade. But when they view Cold Hill House – a huge, dilapidated, Georgian mansion – they are filled with excitement. Despite the financial strain of the move, Ollie sees Cold Hill House as a paradise for his animal-loving daughter, a base for his web-design business and a terrific long-term investment.

But, within days of moving in, it becomes apparent that the Harcourt family aren't the only residents in the house.

At first it is only a friend of Jade, talking to her on FaceTime, who sees a spectral woman standing behind her. Then there are more sightings of her, and increasingly disturbing occurrences. Two weeks after moving in, Caro, out in the garden, is startled to see faces staring out of an upstairs window of the house. The window of a room which may hold the secret to the house's dark history . . .

A room which does not appear to exist.

It being Xmas and all it's a great time to listen to ghost stories. This definitely does not disappoint. The line of the story is not new but catches you up in it and before you know it you really, really, really want to know how it's going to end ... Took an amazing amount of willpower not to cheat and find out before the end! Enjoy!

What a treat !

Fantastic book. Downloaded this on the off chance and not been able to stop listening. Didn't think I could be scared driving down the A6 on my morning commute but I've been proven wrong.

Really creepy

This was an easy listen but a bit fantastical for my liking. Didn't realise it would be such a 'ghost story'. Very well read by the narrator.

Excellent listen

Could be a bit spookier and longer. The best bits happened a bit too quickly and were over just as fast..

Good for a listen

I have searched and searched for a decent paranormal audible book. It takes plenty of inspiration from Amityville Horror (but that’s not a criticism)

I really enjoyed the fact the story grounded itself in reality using real landmarks, radio stations, newspapers etc.

Don’t want to go into the story or twists..... I will definitely listen to it again

Could not stop listening

I bought this book because Peter James never fails to draw me into his stories. This book is a change from his police novels and must be listened to with the lights on. What is real and what is imagined? That is for you to decide. Altogether a good book but sometimes the characters annoy me.
Read it for yourself and see if you agree.

I really liked this book. The narrator was perfect and read the story in a way that kept me hooked the whole time.
Left me a little jumpy too!

A good spook

I loved Peter James early supernatural books and was so pleased he decided to write this one. The plot is very full, detailed and well paced. I would have loved to have been able to listen to it in one sitting, it was such a gripping story. Great for lovers of haunted houses. I will certainly listen to this again. Nicholas Boulton did an amazing job in the narration. His characterisation of the voices was impeccable and constant throughout. You always knew which character you were listening too. The ending was good too, it didn't just fade away. Absolutely brilliant!!!
I really hope he writes another ghost story soon. I love his imaginative mind.

The best book I think I've ever come across!
