Summary

It all started with that night.

The night I made my biggest mistake.

The night I entered their world.

The day I snuck into the infamous Devil’s Ring Fight Club. I had followed my cousin Amelia, who turned out not to be quite as innocent as I first believed. In fact, it turned out she didn’t live in the same world as I did…Not at all.

I knew this the moment I entered his kingdom. My world changed the moment he found me. He gave me a warning that night. He told me if he ever found me again then next time, he wouldn’t be so quick in letting me escape him. His little Red Riding Hood. It was a threat I took seriously as it was only my dreams that took me back to that place. That took me back to him.

That was until they came for me. The Hell Hounds that infiltrated my peaceful world and started the hunt. And there was only one man I knew that had the power to stop them. And my price to pay, was the promise he made me.

That if he ever found me in his demonic fight club again…He was keeping me.

Meaning I only had two choices left, to become the hunted or to make a deal with Hell’s greatest Hunter…

The HellBeast King…

Jared Cerberus.

Great book, rubbish narration

As with all of Stephanie Hudson’s books I have read, they are very enjoyable.
HOWEVER I am not entirely sure what accent Alyssa Avery was trying to hit but someone needs to tell her that missing some vowels and consonants out of the odd word does not constitute a British accent (if that was the aim).
It made listening to the audio book hard work, as some of the words she crucified were painful to take.
If she had just stuck to her natural American accent it would have been a really good listen.

Narrator - another disappointing audible set back

All of the Afterlife books and their spin offs are really good- Stephanie Hudson writes so well giving a really believable character to all the people in the books. However in this audio book the narrator has an awesome voice, but chose to read in a really bad English/Irish/American accent for the main character, missing most of the 't's to words in a very strange way. When she slips to her own accent you feel relieved and it is really good.
The problem with series of books in audible each narrator takes their own vision of a character and if you have listened to the others in the same series it can be quite confusing and VERY VERY disappointing. In this one Lucius who is a bad ass vampire King has been turned into a German Count Dracula :0( who says things with a z- "zat is not good". In both Afterlife and Transfusion over 20 books he has never had an accent and is appalled by being typecast as a 'dracula' vampire.

This also happened in the Transfusion series when our lovely little imp Pip was depicted as an old lady at one point and totally out of character. The imp is called squeak for a reason!!!!!

Because these books are are all entwined with each other it really needs a bit on continuity, and when one narrator gets it so right you can listen many times over- Rebecca Rainsford narrated the Afterlife saga 12 books with many different characters that are all believable- it is a shame she could not be asked to read the others or at least narrators to come could be given notes on the characters so as not to make the stories hard to listen to and characters morphing into clichés etc.
It is such a shame this narrator did not listen to any of the previous books to at least get an idea of the characters - now Lucius in this series sounds nothing like the sexy sultry vampire he is and has forced me to stop listening.
With deepest regret.

Loved reading this book

Great story but the narrator was really bad. Spoilt it for me. Her male voice wasn’t grr enough and some of her words spoken in the English accent were horribly distracting.

the story was great, but its hard to enjoy

did not appreciate the narration, she tries to hard to put on a British accent. which is terrible, hardly puts any effort into the male voices and sounds more like she's trying to sound creepy throughout the whole thing, hard to get lost in the story, not listening to the other books due to it being the same narrator.

Surprised!!

So this is the first book, of a new series, based in the "Afterlife" universe. It's a great introduction to Jared and his world, other than the glimpses we've had in prior books of different series.

Now to be honest the book is worth five stars, but in the end I could only give it four. Now I imagine you wondering why I'd do that, if I believed it to be a five star book, well the answer is this....

There are a lot of grammatical errors throughout and yes it surprised the absolute hell out of me too. After all, Stephanie's books hardly have any errors at all!!

But it seems that the ball has definitely been dropped in this case. They're errors that should have been picked up by the following, if not herself, those being the proofreading and editing teams....and if she has one....her ARC group. These are definitely things I'd have picked up on and emailed them back to her, as it's what I do for the seven authors in which, I'm in their ARC teams and one author I'm a Beta reader for prior to it then going to her ARC group!!

So because of this I could not, in good conscience, give the full five stars. Sorry Stephanie 🤷🤷

Now onto the story itself....

Just like all of Stephanie's books, the story is great. It has everything any reader looks for.

*There's the love interest, Jared and Ella.

*There's plenty of action

*Lots of fear

*Lots of pain

*Kidnapping

*Death

*Tears

*And finally, but not least....threats made by both enemies and over bearing and over protective alphaholes!! 🙄🙄

In other words, what more could you possibly want?? It has everything going on and it keeps the metaphorical pages turning, from front to back and then ready and eager for the next book.

Now with this book is the option of buying the audio too. Now I like to listen at the same time as I'm reading my books, if there is that option. With the right narrator it can really up the enjoyment.

The narrator with this book is a woman called Alyssa Avery, and I have to admit that her accent just really throws me.

Now don't get me wrong, she's brilliant with the different accents, but it's the accent of Ella in which I'm finding myself confused by....🙉🙉🤔🤔

She's supposed to have an accent that is American with a hint of Liverpudlian, as her mother is from Liverpool England. However, her accent seems to be more like a Cockney with a hint of American. I wonder if anyone else has picked this up too 🤔🤔

But if you can ignore the confusing accent, then trust me it's worth listening too, as she hits all the others without issue and it does help to heighten the enjoyment of the book. So I'm going to recommend both 😏😉

A good start

Story felt a bit slow but was actually enjoyable and worth listening to. The reader was good but her accent for the main character was odd at times. It was meant to be English but I could detect at least 4 different dialects, sometimes all mixed in together in one sentence. Thankfully this calmed down a bit as the story went on. The accents she did for the other characters was better, hence 4 stars and not 3 for performance. This was book 1 and it was enjoyable enough for me to go looking for book 2 after posting this.
