Summary
A funny, joyful, frank and inspiring book about embracing both feminism and our imperfections, from the creator of the hit comedy podcast, Deborah Frances-White.
In 2015 I described myself as 'guilty feminist' for the first time. My goals were noble, but my concerns were trivial. I desperately wanted to close the pay gap, but I also wanted to look good sitting down naked.
From inclusion to the secret autonomy in rom coms, from effective activism to what poker can tell us about power structures, Deborah explores what it means to be a 21st-century feminist and encourages us to make the world better for everyone.
This audiobook also includes exclusive interviews with performers, activists and thinkers - Jessamyn Stanley, Zoe Coombs Marr, Susan Wokoma, Bisha K. Ali, Reubs Walsh, Becca Bunce, Amika George, Mo Mansfied and Leyla Hussein - plus a piece from Hannah Gadsby.
Read by Deborah Frances-White, this audiobook includes live excerpts from The Guilty Feminist podcast, with interviews narrated by Adjoa Andoh and Becca Bunce.
Critic reviews
"This really is the 'everything you have always wanted to know about feminism but were afraid to ask' manual. From a mind as lucid and witty as it is kind and empathetic comes essential reading for the planet." (Emma Thompson)
Praise for The Guilty Feminist podcast: "'Hilarious, irreverent, eternally surprising, classy as hell, genius comedians... It's shows like this that breathe life into conversations about feminism." (Phoebe Waller-Bridge)
"Tackles issues from democracy to sexuality to porn with a lightness and hilarity that makes even the newly ordained feminist feel at home." (Scarlett Curtis, Sunday Times)

Love DFW, not so much the interviews
I love DFW, her voice her narration and her topics. She’s engaging all the way through and never boring.
I really didn’t like the interviews as they’re not true interviews, they’re voiced over by one person for all 12 people and it’s really not great. It distracted me the entire time from the interesting messages the people who were represented were putting forward.

Some great points but not my favourite book of the genre
I didn’t relate hugely to a lot of the discussions within this book - possibly because I live a very privileged life and I’m sheltered from issues other women face daily - but there where some good parts I found inspiring. The biggest issue with the audiobook though is many of the chapters contain interviews which have obviously been transcribed - fantastic in practice but so infuriating to listen to what in your head you want to be a conversation, but because they’re actually both just reading aloud it’s all very wooden sounding.

Took me a while to get in to it but worth it
I’d never heard of Deborah Frances-White before I bought this book, and I struggled at first to get in to it. However, the more I listened the more I loved it, until I finished the book on Wednesday and went to see Deborah’s Podcast live on the Saturday. Wonderfully witty and full of insights from all sorts of people. My only complaint, like many others, would be the voice acting for the interview sections. This massively threw me off, so that I felt disappointed when these sections came up, no matter how valuable to content of the interview. Still, a great read that I found myself desperate for more of. Thank goodness for the podcasts.

Hugely overrated
I am a feminist ... and I hated this book. I think the most annoying part is the acted voices for guest quotes - if you can’t get the real person, just read them in a normal voice. The acting was appalling and really strange. Maybe I’m naive but I expected to learn a lot more from this book but it was very self indulgent.

The greatest read for any woman and decent man!
Honestly I adored this book. I'm going to try to get all my friends and family and partner to read it. Discussing all issues from equal pay to BDSM to intersectionality - this covered ALL. Hilariously written, wonderfully read. Thank you DFW!!!

Highly Recommended!
I loved how the author made everything so relatable and provides action plans that you can take as a guilty feminist.

Enabling
All it does is makes you feel good about your bad behaviors. If you know you should change but you don’t want to then just read this book and you will feel infinitely better about the poopy things you’re doing without changing them.
