About this listen
In thirteenth-century Britain, Gerald Warbow, legendary archer to the king, prepares to pass on the torch…once he’s dealt with William Wallace.…
Having fought valiantly for Lord–now King–Edward, Gerald Warbow has settled into the life of a country gentleman. He has a comfortable life with a wife he loves and three growing–if occasionally irritating–children. Conscious that time is passing, Gerald devotes his time to farming and to training local archers, including his eldest son, Hamo.
But the call of duty is never far away.
The mysterious death of King Alexander of Scotland in 1286, and subsequent questions of succession, have plunged that nation into turmoil. In Wales, trouble still abounds. And as discontent threatens to spill over on several fronts, Gerald is once again called into action for his king and his people.
The Great Cause is the fifth book in Griff Hosker’s acclaimed Lord Edward’s Archer series, and takes the listener on an immersive journey through medieval England, Wales, and Scotland with great attention to detail and striking accuracy. It is essential listening for all fans of the series, for anyone interested in military and medieval history and for all who appreciate good historical fiction.
Griff Hosker qualified as an English and Drama teacher in 1972 and worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time he wrote plays, pantos, and musicals for his students. He then set up his own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges. The financial crash of 2010 ended that avenue of work, and he found that he had time on his hands. Griff started researching the Roman invasion of Britain and began to create a novel.

Awful Narration
I have never been so glad to reach the end of a book as this one; purely because it marks the end of Owen Frost's narration of the series. If it had not been for Griff Hosker's masterful and compelling storytelling, I would have abandoned this series halfway through the second volume. I realise that picking up the reins from Marstom York is a big ask, but Frost is dire in this series. While purporting to narrate in a very odd spurious North Walian accent, he completely mangles almost every place name, not only in Wales but also in Scotland. I expect better research than this from Audible. Also, the cadence of his Welsh and Scottish accents leaves a lot to be desired,
In addition to this, his phrasing is very, very odd. I have read most of Hosker's novels and regard him as an excellent storyteller with a very good grasp of English grammar. This helps his work to come alive on the page, Frost, however seems to ignore the punctuation in many places, giving a nonsensical sound to much of the narration, Added to this is an almost random stress pattern, especially in the protagonist's descriptions and reactions, where nouns, pronouns and prepositions are oddly stressed, making some passages quite annoying to listen to.
Sorry if I'm being picky, I know it's not an easy job; as a retired teacher of English and Drama, I spent 30-odd years reading novels and plays aloud to pupils and larger audiences, However, Audiobooks are not cheap and both listeners and authors deserve the best they can get. Sadly, this isn't it
