Story
Everyone tells Martha Friel she is clever and beautiful, a brilliant writer who has been loved every day of her adult life by one man, her husband Patrick. So why is everything broken? Why is Martha - on the edge of 40 - friendless, practically jobless and so often sad? And why did Patrick decide to leave? Maybe she is just too sensitive, someone who finds it harder to be alive than most people. Or maybe - as she has long believed - there is something wrong with her.

The many voices of The Promise tell a story in four snapshots, each one centered on a family funeral, each one happening in a different decade. In the background, a different president is in power, and a different spirit hangs over the country, while in the foreground the family fights over what they call their farm, on a worthless piece of land outside Pretoria. Over large jumps in time, people get older, faces and laws and lives all change, while a brother and sister circle around a promise made long ago and never kept....

Story
Jean Swinney is a feature writer on a local paper, disappointed in love and - on the brink of 40 - living a limited existence with her truculent mother: a small life from which there is no likelihood of escape. When a young Swiss woman, Gretchen Tilbury, contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. But the more Jean investigates, the more her life becomes strangely (and not unpleasantly) intertwined with that of the Tilburys.

Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He isn't as young as he used to be. He drives a Saab. He points at people he doesn't like the look of. He is described by those around his as 'the neighbour from hell'.Every morning he makes his inspection rounds of the local streets. He moves bicycles and checks the contents of recycling bins, even though it's been years since he was fired as Chairman of the Residents' Association in a vicious 'coup d'état'.

Summary
Mama say: "Your schooling is your voice, child.
It will be speaking for you even if you didn't open your mouth to talk.
It will be speaking till the day God is calling you come."
That day, I tell myself that even if I am not getting anything in this life,
I will go to school and become Teacher.
Because I don't just want to be having any kind voice....
I want a louding voice.
14-year-old Adunni has a dream: to be educated. But her father needs her bride-price, so sells his daughter to an older man, who demands she give him the fine boy-children his first two wives have failed to produce.
When things go tragically wrong, Adunni flees to Lagos. It's what she has always wanted, to leave Ikati and see the world, and though her heart is full of sorrow for her lost family and the shame she has left behind, still Adunni will not be quiet and do as she's told.
Sold again as a housemaid to a successful businesswoman, she continues to question all she sees: why Big Madam, in her big house, has a cage of sadness round her soul; what happened to Rebecca, the girl who worked in her place before; and whether it is possible, when you are born into a life of no money and plenty suffering, to become a somebody of value.

Uplifting Story
Disclaimer, I have met the author. Having said that, it is a wonderful book. Being a man, I take umbrage at this book being in my humble opinion biased towards women. As every man in this book is flawed bordering on evil, with the exception of one. Being a Nigerian, I am aggrieved by the fact the only decent non-exploitative Nigerian is UK educated and influenced. The attitudes of our once colonial masters give the impression they continue to be our social betters.
My grievances aside the story is told with heart warming simplicity from the illiterate Adunni’s standpoint. The tale is at once harrowing, disheartening in places and uplifting in most, a veritable emotional kaleidoscope, which is just unexpectedly thrilling. You find yourself rooting for Adunni’s indomitable spirit and in so doing your heart and mind are opened to her cry not just for herself but for others like her to be human, to express their self-worth, to have their Louding voices heard and for there to be a different approach to their treatment. Adunni’s voice from the pages resonates clear and loud.

Horrendous Narration - couldn’t you find a Nigerian narrator?
This audiobook was RUINED by the narration. The narrator is Ghanaian. Her accent, to my Nigerian ears, was PAINFUL to listen to. Painful and distracting. So many mispronunciations.
It’s akin to getting a Scottish narrator to narrate the accent of an English character.
Not all West Africans sound alike. It’s atrocious. Please fix it.

Great story, narration not so there
Great story - I was rooting for Adunni through out. She has to be one of my favourite protagonists. The narration was interesting - the narrator had a way of capturing the essence of the story definitely. However, the narrator's pronunciations of Yoruba and Nigerian words really threw me off. Each mispronunciation (and there were quite a few) affected my overall appreciation for the narration.

Beautiful developed and powerfully told
This is not just any story, it is a powerful story with the strongest characters whom we get to know over time. It is a story about resilience, monetary wealth versus character wealth. It is a story about moral poverty versus moral riches. It is a story that take the reader along, routing and hoping as we get to dream along with the characters for a better future.

Absolutely Incredible
I enjoyed meeting this character Adunni, this beautiful story shows how a young girl beats the odds life presented to her and moves on to find her self a better life, the path leading to fulfilling her dream of having a voice in the society which she calls a Louding Voice is rough. Child Marriage, the importance of girl child education, domestic abuse and stereotypes women face in the society all form part of the discuss. Adunni shows so much persistence, hoped against all hope and pushed until she achieved her goal. Adunni is an amazing character, she's funny, bold and daring making this book so hilarious yet you simply can't miss the point. I loved this book and would be doing a video review on my YouTube channel - PAGES Highlights. The performance was not so perfect as the accent was clearly Ghanian and not Nigerian, many of the Nigerian words and names were not properly pronounced, however the performer did amazing in portraying Adunni 's emotions at different times. This book definitely deserves my five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Mediocre story, not helped by audio version
I initially got the written version of this book and when I saw that it was written in pidgin, I felt that getting the audiobook would be a good way to get into the flow of the story. I was wrong.
The story itself is not anything new. It feels like a collection of every cliché storline from primary school composition books. Abi Dare's writing isn't actually bad, there just isn't anything fresh about the story. However, I found that I struggled to like the lead character. I imagine the writer thinks of Adunni as outspoken, and curious and motivated, but under Adjoa Andoh's reading, she just comes off as annoying, overdramatic and whiny. I had literal eye-roll moments, and would have to stop listening. I kept wanting to let go of the book, but the fact that it has such high reviews and I had spent on both the kindle and audible version kept me going.
At some point, I started listening at 2x speed, just so that I could get to the end of the book.
A couple of days ago, I switched back to the written book, and to my surprise, found out that while the audio is 12 hours long, the book itself is only 200 pages. I also discovered that without Adjoa Andoh's performance, Adonni becomes much easier to consume.
I found the last couple of chapters very nice, and was surprised to find that by the time I finished the book, I was actually reconciled with the writing, and hoping that Abi Dare will put out another book. I think now that the obvious stories are out of the way, she can become a force to reckon with.
Not a bad book, but really wouldn't recommend the audio version.

Amazing & exceptional listen! 10 stars.
I seldom write reviews on Audible, but this book, so well-written by Abi Daré, was enjoyable from the first sentence to the last. I enjoyed every minute of the journey with Adduni. Adjoa Andoh is THE BEST narrator I have come across in my years of listening to Audible productions. I was instantly transported to Ikati and Big Madame's compound. This book is excellent and highly recommended.
