About this listen

A seashell, a sealed letter from a tenuous connection to a forbidden wartime romance...

Union of South Africa, 1937: Louise Ahrendts, daughter of a shipbuilder, nurtures the idea that through hard work, she could step beyond a destiny of domestic service. When the Second World War breaks out and the port becomes a hub of activity, Louise's path crosses with that of Lieutenant David Horrocks. Despite the gulf in their backgrounds, Louise and David are determined to be together. But as the end of the war approaches, will they find their way back to each other?

This book is enchanting and as someone who grew up in the Cape Peninsula and knows Simonstown well, the details in the book are very accurate, both geographically and historically. Congratulations to the author. I shall miss listening to it. JW

Enchanting

This is history than needs to be made known - as shocking and uncomfortable as it is. I wish I had bought a copy of the book to read myself as the narrator gets the sayings and accents and things so specific to South Africa horribly wrong - surely correct and proper pronunciation is something Audible would check thoroughly?! The story is most definitely worth a read but sadly not worth a listen in this format.

Terrible misrepresentation of South African accents spoils a beautiful story that needs to be told.
