About this listen

Norfolk, 1953. The Fens have never seen anything quite like the girls from USAF Drampton. Overpaid, overfed and over here. While their men patrol the skies keeping the Soviets at bay, some are content to live the life of the Future Homemakers of America - clipping coupons, cooking chicken pot pie - but others start to stray, looking for a little native excitement beyond the perimeter fence.

Out there in the freezing fens they meet Kath Pharaoh, a tough but warm Englishwoman. Bonds are forged, uniting the women in friendship that will survive distant postings and the passage of 40 years.

I enjoyed this. Likeable characters. Lots of heart. Peggy and Kath, from Norfolk, were my favourite characters.

Warm hearted

I read this book years ago and I couldn’t put it down, just as fun the second time round and the narrator was brilliant

Very enjoyable

Loved the characters and the sweep of time covered from mid 50s to the 90s ( I assume) Interesting to discover societal norms and follow the Ladies development from young wives and mothers whose role was to support their husbands to women who (in the majority) develop their own identities. Interesting way to bring such different personalities together and to cover the inevitable ups and downs of life.

Insightful

I got 20 mins in and had to give up what could have been a good story because the narrator's attempt at an English accent was not only from the wrong region but was worse than Dick Van Dyke's attempt at cockney.

Awful English accents
