Summary
New York Times best-selling author Patti Callahan Henry returns to the beloved Lowcountry setting of The Bookshop at Water's End with a novel of one woman's homecoming.
On her wedding day 10 years ago, Lena Donohue experienced a betrayal so painful that she fled the small town of Watersend, South Carolina, and reinvented herself in New York City. Though now a freelance travel writer, the one place she rarely goes is home - until she learns of her dad's failing health.
Returning to Watersend means seeing the sister she has avoided for a decade and the brother who runs their family's Irish pub - and who has borne the burden of his sisters' rift. While Alzheimer's slowly steals their father's memories, the siblings rush to preserve his life in stories and photographs. As his secret past brings Lena's own childhood into focus, it sends her on a journey to discover the true meaning of home....

Loved the story and the narration
I bought this audiobook because I love Joshlyn Jackson. I loved it as much as I love her own stories.

MUST Read
I originally chose this book too quickly, thinking it was written by Jackson, not narrated her. Instead, I got the very best of both worlds. A fantastic book by an author I hadn’t yet discovered and another one narrated by an author I adore, but THE BEST narrator here on audible. Can’t say enough! ❤️

Narrator’s voice
This was a sweet story with family angst and a realistic slant on Alzheimer’s....but I had to give up on the audible version and read the book. The narrator had such a juvenile voice and one of the main character’s (sister, Hallie) narration was so awful I just had to stop. She played the
character as so whiny there was no way to feel even an iota of sympathy for her. Good story. Terrible narration.

Not What You Think
I was pleasantly surprised when the story kept me guessing. Things are not what they initially seem to be which is a good thing.

Read...DO NOT listen
Positive takeaway: not a bad story
Negative takeaway: narrator was awful. The whiney “negative Nancy” voice she gave to Halley was awful. And her interpretation of the male characters voices was as bad. If I ever see another book narrated by her, I WILL NOT read. Thus only one star for the performance. Wanted to give it zero, but it made me rate it.
I wish I would have read vs listen.

Not my favorite performer!
The voice of Haley is especially whiny! Made it hard to listen to. All the girl voices were rather whiny!

Too much repetition
I prefer a story that moves forward fairly quickly. Henry keeps rehashing the anger, disappointment, bad feelings, etc. on and on and on. I get it . The repetition drags the story down.

Mediocre
Story was mediocre. Not terrible, but not great. The narrator’s voice is very whiny and hard to listen to.
