Summary
Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother of three, questions her identity in the wake of a shattering loss. As each woman struggles with her own demons, their lives collide in ways that have irreversible consequences for them all. The Expatriates is an atmospheric, moving, and utterly compelling story of motherhood and family set against the unforgettable backdrop of Hong Kong.

What a brilliant book!
So pleased I have read this before the film comes out because although I am sure the film will be lovely - surely it will never get across the depth of character that the Janice YK Lee so successfully portrays in every one of these women. Beautifully read too.

Enjoyable!
A nice story, full of quirks and plot twists that make it captivating. Sensitivity of the author really adds up to the story, by bringing deep questions about humanity to the table
