Summary

John Lister-Kaye has spent a lifetime exploring, protecting and celebrating the British landscape and its wildlife.

Lister-Kaye's joyous childhood holidays - spent scrambling through hedges and ditches after birds and small beasts, keeping pigeons in the loft and tracking foxes around the edge of the garden - were the perfect apprenticeship for his two lifelong passions: exploring the wonders of nature and writing about them.

Warm, wise and full of wonder, The Dun Cow Rib is a captivating coming of age tale by one of the founding fathers of nature writing.

A dream completed

As someone far nearer to the end of life than the beginning, this book was a real joy to listen to. For many years my wife and I had a dteam of visiting Aigas. It looked like, for many years, a dream that would not be fulfilled. With the pressures that come with a young family and the life of a parochial ministry, a visit was always just out of reach. Some 10 years ago I had reason to exchange emails with Sir John and told him of that dream, his reply was “Keep focused on that dream and one day it will come true.” It finally did come true when my wife and I retired and we received (albeit from ourselves) a present of a five week tour of the Highlands which included a three day stay at Aigas. It was so much more than we even dreamed of. One of the highlights for ourselves was an over supper conversation with Sir John and Mark Cocker. Listening (my eyesight is no longer up to reading, nowadays) to this book completed our dream and brought about a much deeper understanding of Sir John’s. life and the life of Aigas. A read that is both humerous and heartbreaking at times, also a greater understanding of the passion of Sir John’s development as one of the leading conservationists of our time.
