Summary

December, 1940. Christmas is coming, but the season of goodwill is overshadowed by the death and destruction of the Blitz. In London's Covent Garden, where the glamour of theatreland rubs shoulders with the bustle of the capital's biggest fruit and vegetable market, the war has closed the theatres and ruined the market trade.

When a daylight air raid hits the Prince Albert Theatre in Drury Lane, rescuers find a man dying in the wreckage. But it wasn't the bomb that's ending his life - he's been stabbed, and with his dying breath he whispers what sounds like a fragmented confession. As Detective Inspector John Jago begins to investigate, there's an underlying question he must grapple with: was the murdered man himself a killer?

Brilliantly narrated enjoyable story

This is a superb series in the same vein as Jim Eldridge’s DCI Coburg and Sgt Lampson, The Blitz Detective by Mike Hollow or Kerry Tombs’ Ravenscroft. More (fictional) murders please.

Excellent instalment in this series

Another wonderful episode which so perfectly describes life in London during the Second World War in so far as I can tell from stories told me just a few years afterwards by my family. I like the snippets of news referring to factual events such as the Lancastria sinking (killing more people than the Titanic and Lusitania put together) and the lives of actors and other performers. These novels are well written and well performed which is much appreciated when rather a large number of authors and narrators fall far short of competency at the moment.
Great series and I look forward to the next instalment.

The Covent Garden Murder

I love the Blitz Detective. I’ve read all of them and loved every one of them. You are transported back to London during the World War 2, and captivated by the events and the story. Love the Narrator’s voice as he brings the story to life. I highly recommend that everyone gives these books a read/listen.

Cosy Crime

Predictable and comfortable- as usual a series of interviews and conversations conducted by the dynamic duo building up to the big reveal. Oh - and a bit of history now and again chucked in.

Fabulous crime series

These books are a great series set during the Second World War. DI Jago is a classic English DI, cool, logical but also kind. The blitz is raging in London and the discovery of a body found after a bomb has landed doesn’t seem to look like a victim of the explosion. The story that unfolds is complex but enjoyable and the narrator delivers it well.
