In May of 1996, 33 people went up the mountain, but only 28 returned. Although the author made it back to the safety of his tent, he defied his own pain and exhaustion to go back up the mountain. His rescue attempt saved the lives of three climbers. The events of those two fateful days prompted researchers at MIT to develop new technology that could prevent the recurrence of such a disaster. Narrators Richard M. Davidson and Nelson Runger sensitively convey the full scope of a drama and a tragedy the world hopes never to see again.

It is good to understand these events from Anatoli himself. A must listen. This feels like an honest and truly heart felt account.

Well written account of the tragedy.
I have read multiple accounts of this climb and consider this to be one of the best.
I feel that it is written in a matter of fact way without any embellishments to enhance or degrade anyone's participation in it.
unlike other books by other climbers on the route, it is not used to cast aspertions, dealing only with facts.
a very powerful account of a terrible incident which will live forever in the history of the mountain.

Far more trueful and realistic than the films that have been made of the tragedy on Everest. Highly recommended

it's okay. not as good as into thin air.
I don't blame Anatoli but it doesn't have the pull of into thin air. the reader was not good though.
