About this listen

There is magic beyond the real world....

Effie Truelove has learned to travel through magical books to the Otherworld. Maximillian Underwood, Effie's classmate, is more interested in the dark and forbidden Underworld. When Effie and Maximilian both mysteriously vanish, their friends Raven, Lexy and Wolf don't know where to turn for help. Raven is a witch, and her horse, Echo, has revealed that Effie is in deep danger and time is running out.

To make things worse, Raven's mother, the author Laurel Wilde, is caught up in a plot with the ruthless billionaire Albion Freake, who will stop at nothing to become invincible. Where are Effie and Maximilian? Are their disappearances connected? And can Albion Freake's deadly plan be stopped?

Thor

I think that the story was excellent but the narrator wasn’t the best.this is good for fans of Harry Potter.

brilliant magical tale

The whole family has enjoyed listening to this more than once. It is the sequel to Dragon 's Green, which tells the story of Effie Truelove who discovers her magical powers and a way into another world through her grandfather 's library. its a shame part 3 is not available on Audible, but we have the book.

Scarlet strikes again

I’m a big fan of Scarlet Thomas’ work and saw these children ‘s books as an opportunity to get some more. The second book in the series is not quite up to the first. I found this a bit muddled in parts and quite a confusing list of characters. But still very enjoyable- and picking up on her usual themes of time, reality and magic in the everyday. Competently read but I was sure about the voice representation given the age and gender of the main character. But still I give it four out if five because it’s Scarlet!

Simply brilliant

A dazzling sequel to Dragon’s Green. Scarlett Thomas excels at writing rich, layered novels, and this one is a cornucopia of pleasures for children and adults at the same time. Roger Allam is a sensitive and appreciative reader. Fabulous all round.

Wonderful!

I wonderful story beautifully read. Suitable for age 7+ I'd say. It's the second book in the Worldquake trilogy. The audiobook of Dragon's Green (the first in the series) is excellent too. We enjoyed listening to both audiobooks with our 8 year old twins in the car.

Great series but not sure it’s really for kids

The good: I’m really enjoying this series and Roger Allam’s narration is great. It uses some really interesting, inventive ideas and the plot kept me rooting for the main characters. Also the chapter titles are correctly timed, unlike with book 1.

The not-so-good: this book is ABOUT children but I don’t really think it’s FOR children. It’s disappointing that there isn’t more world-building - it has a few intriguing details about things like Euston station now being a butterfly house and it really needs more of that kind of that colour and detail. You can overdo that kind of thing, but you can also underdo it.

I’m also really frustrated and upset that after recording the first two books, there isn’t an audiobook of book 3 - I asked the publisher and they said they weren’t recording one. So I’ll have to get book 3 in a different format, when I’d really like it on audio. Not cool - if you’re going to record a series, don’t just stop?!
