About this listen
For over a decade, Ben Garrod has studied chimpanzees to find ways to protect and conserve them. We join Ben on a journey that has taken him around the world, studying eastern chimps in the humid forests of Uganda and the critically endangered western chimps of Liberia.
In his trademark infectious, lighthearted style, Ben describes encounters with chimpanzees that highlight the different threats they face. From the illegal international pet trade, to bushmeat markets, and the effects of relentless habitat loss - not to mention how your new furniture, your toothpaste and even your mobile phone are all implicated in their falling numbers. With access to world-renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall, Ben shows how we can protect the chimps of the future and help conserve this endlessly fascinating species.

Essential listening
I loved this book. I’m not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination but I love spending time in nature and learning more about how our actions affect species and habitats across the world. I certainly learned a lot here.
The book is read by the author and that’s a huge plus. His knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject really comes across, as does his sense of humour. It’s refreshing to hear from someone who isn’t afraid to take the mickey out of himself and admit to silly mistakes.
While there are plenty of laughs here, it’s not always an easy listen. I found the chapter on animal testing particularly tough, even as someone who has avoided animal tested products for 20 odd years. At the same time, the tone isn’t preachy. The author acknowledges the practical difficulties in reconciling ethics with practicality.
More than anything, I’m left with an indelible impression of the characters of the chimps. They’re the real stars, along with the people who protect them. Give this book a listen, you won’t regret it.

Thought provoking tale
Decided to listen to this having listened to his grown up guides. This book comes to life with his narration and you can tell in his voice that he has a passion and wonder of these amazing creatures. I found the mix of humour, facts and plights of the chimps and those faced by their nearest relatives were spot on.
