Summary
In 1360, the Great Bridge over the River Cam is close to collapse. To repair it will cost the town and the University dear, especially if its rotten wood is replaced by more durable stone. As arguments rage over raising the money other, equally heated, differences are coming to the boil over the election of a new chancellor. While the majority support Brother Michael for the post, at least one of his opponents aims to seize it by fair means or foul. Then the discovery of a body under the bridge and the disappearance of two scholars throws a more sinister shadow over both disputes.
Matthew Bartholomew, the University's corpse examiner, already has his hands full: due to marry in under a fortnight, he is determined to conclude his teaching duties and deal with an outbreak of the summer flux before relinquishing his official duties. With more deaths, an 'accident' at the bridge and an increasing stench of corruption over the financing of the bridge's repairs, he realises he owes more to his soon-to-be former colleagues than to his future life as a secular doctor.
But will there be enough time for him to unveil the identities of those who seek to undermine both the town and the University, or will he prove powerless to protect those he loves from death or disgrace or worse?

Blaze of Glory? No, Mystery Before All Else.
And so we come to the last of the series of 25 and – overall - a journey well worth taking. For several adventures past I had been looking forward to this last mystery wondering whether there would be the kind of send-off leaving all avid followers with that feel-good warmth, before finding a new series to follow. This complex mystery leads to a significant challenge to the main characters, University and town. Within it is a highly satisfactory resolve for one of the characters we have loved to hate. Another a largely positive view of another (to my surprise). Whether everyone will feel that enough is made of putting other things ‘right’ and celebrating is open to question. Frankly I was disappointed. More would not have been too demanding to ask for. I had hoped that certain female characters would have been put more to the fore. To say more would spoil. Where next? Continue with Thomas Chaloner (all ready and waiting), and all those other books begging attention in my Audible library. One of the considerable benefits of Audible’s magnificent offerings with Daily Deal, 2 for 1, and £3 offers. As to the audio-book David Thorpe serves it very well. Good bye, Matthew – fare you well.

I loved this story.
Everything comes right in the end.
It's a shame this sounds like the last one as I have throughly enjoyed this series and I"ll miss these much loved characters.

Fantastic
I have loved each and every one of this series, I'm so glad this had the long awaited wedding in it, thank you.
David Thorpe's narration in these books has been wonderful, he had me laughing out loud at Michael, Isnard and Cannich . Thank you again.

Bitter sweet conclusion
All’s well when it ends well but I wish things didn’t finish here! Whilst I am amazed of how the author manages to find real events of that period and weave them into a proper yarn, I wish Michael and Matt didn’t have to be constrained by that. I could see them going to Ely, with Michael as abbot and Matt as medicus in its hospital. I love both characters and it’s a pity, in a way, that Michael had a smaller “role” in this book. Narration was excellent as usual, although Michael did sound too pompous for the first 2/3rds of the book. Thank goodness he “recovered” at the end. I have so enjoyed this series of books, as narrated by David Thorpe. Hugely enjoyable ending, though bitter sweet.

The 25th brilliant book in the series!
Every single one of the books in Susanna Gregory’s series about Matthew Bartholomew is amazing. The quality never dips in any book. I recommend them to anyone who likes historical fiction: you will not be disappointed.

The End. It’s been along journey
By accident I found Mathew Bartholomew book 3 and was hooked from that point over a long period I have jumped in and out of his and Michael’s lives and enjoyed every hour. The final book never disappoints with all the normal characters and life returns to normal in Cambridge. My advice is to start on book one, if you are still with it a quarter of the way in you have a further 24 to enjoy

Historical Crime Thriller
Generally entertaining, but certain words such as ergot, moreover etc., start to grate as they are overused, I presume to give an historical flavour. This is contrasted by some very modern phrases such as "the common cold"! Bartholomew seems such a nitwit sometimes and I can't believe the inept way he questions people! Despite these criticisms, it is still a fun read.

Another excellent book by Susanna Gregory and fantastic narration by David Thorpe, he really brings characters to life, wishing he would narrate all audio books, absolutely brilliant!
