About this listen

In late 1923, the newly married Daisy Dalrymple and her husband, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, come to America for a honeymoon visit. In the midst of a pleasure trip, however, both work in a bit of business - Alec travels to Washington, DC, to consult with the US government, Daisy to New York to meet with her American magazine editor.

While in New York, Daisy stays at the famed Hotel Chelsea, which is not only close to the Flatiron Building offices of Abroad magazine, where she'll be meeting with her editor, but home to many of New York's artists and writers.

After her late-morning meeting, Daisy agrees to accompany her editor, Mr. Thorwald, to lunch. But as they are leaving the offices, they hear a gunshot and see a man plummeting down an elevator shaft. The man killed was one of her fellow residents at the Hotel Chelsea, Otis Carmody, who was a journalist with no end of enemies - personal and professional - who would delight in his death. Again in the midst of a murder investigation, Daisy's search for the killer takes her to all levels of society - and even on a mad dash across the country - as she attempts to solve a puzzle that would baffle even Philo Vance himself.

Part of an Excellent series

Unfortunately, although this is the third narrator for this series, they are still not English. Maybe these books should be called "The case of the murdered English Language". I am a big fan of the stories but not a fan at all of any of the narrators.

Far fetched story and stereotyped characters

I've listened to several Carola Dunn books, always found them a reasonably pleasant and undemanding listen despite narration by someone with an American accent and no knowledge of British pronunciation - and who makes Alec from Scotland Yard sound as though he is in pain.
However this one is just far fetched, with an unrealistic storyline more like a thriller and incredibly stereotyped American police, although it does touch on some social aspects of the 1920s, such as prohibition, equality for women in employment and discrimination against people of colour.
I'm glad it's included with Audible membership as I wouldn't have been pleased if I had paid for it.

Very good performance by narrator. I'm glad I found this series. I really enjoy the stories and the social history.

Best one so far.

Thoroughly enjoyed Daisy’s adventure. Loved her first flight across America. Daisy always gets her man.

Narrator

At last an excellent narrator, so much better to listen to, which makes these books much more enjoyable. Nearly gave up reading them due to dreadful accents reading so many words badly, I'm glad I didn't though this lady so good

Awful accents . Needed 2 storytellers.

Would have been so much better if because of the amount of male and female voices and different accents needed that a man and woman could have read this . The Chicago style “mafia “ cop voice was awful and so was one of the sisters who just seem to screech “oh myyyyyy” a lot . Story line was interesting until the last 3 chapters when it just faded and the end was lacking in everything.

Excellent story

I love these books. Narration and accents are good. As usual the story and characters come to
Life straightaway. Moving onto the next one.

What one has come to expect

What one has come to expect from Daisy and her author , gentle engrossing entertainment. I still find the narration slightly odd the lady tries too hard.
