About this listen

If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!

The Blood Crows is the enthralling twelfth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must-read for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

Britannia, AD 51. For nearly a decade, the Roman Empire has fought to assert its hold over Britannia. But relentless opposition from native tribes led by the fanatical King Caratacus threatens to destroy everything. Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro are dispatched from Rome to aid the campaign. Placed in command of an outpost in the remote western mountains, they face a challenge even more deadly than the unremitting attacks of barbarian forces.

For they must wrench control of the fort from Centurion Quertus, a man who wages a savage personal war and inspires a loyalty in his men above their bond with Rome. With dangerous enemies on both sides, Cato and Macro face the fight of their lives to bring peace to the most perilous frontier in Europe.

If you're a fan of Roman fiction, then you absolutely have to check out this series of books. They are simply perfect, and the Audible version is made even better thanks to the incredible performance by Jonathan Keeble. His narration is pitch-perfect, keeping the pace just right and bringing all the right emotions to the story. It's so refreshing to find an audiobook where the reader doesn't let you down, and Keeble absolutely nails it with this one. So if you're looking for a gripping, immersive Roman adventure, look no further than this series - you won't regret it!

This series just goes from strength to strength. A series of adventures without ever being rushed or cramped. Cato's promotion is believable but held in check by his relationship with Macro. Must get the next installment

I’m so glad I decided to read this series of books or rather listen to them. Each book has me wanting more of them. The 2 main characters are brilliant i can imagine the danger to come roll on book 13

Absolute thriller

As always, Simon Scarrow's books have a depth to them. This one is no exception. The period was cruel, full of intrigue and deception, and then there were the men who had honour and integrity. There is always a lot to learn of the human condition, as appropriate now as it was then. Simon Scarrow's books never fail to satisfy. Please keep writing!

Gripping

The pace the Author builds is so amazingly done. The fight scenes just build and build, making your heart race, making you really feel for the characters. I am not normally one to go for the drama, but the drama built in this story was so well done. It got you hooked from the start, you wanted and needed to find out how they were both going to handle the situation. Were they going to finally be in a situation where they couldn’t really win? In a way, it did feel that way, even with the outcome that happened.

I have to really give the Narrator some big credit, he was so smooth with all the different accents and the way he voice picked up for the fight scenes. He increased the pace of the wording just to build that extra bit of tension.

Overall this is a great story and it has generally good narration, until he tries a voice for Macro's mum. His otherwise great narration then turns a character into a cartoon witch's voice. I appreciate that it must be difficult but, there must have been an alternative. Fortunately, she exits the book early on, and we can get back to the gripping action and suspense that we have come to expect from this series.
Overall, a really enjoyable book.

Good narration, until he tries a female voice.
