About this listen

Five friends, one sleepy village, and a mystery brimming with dark secrets.

England, 1941. The tranquil village of Crofter’s Green seems like a haven from the chaos of wartime. But when a local air raid warden is found dead in the village churchyard, five villagers--some getting on in years and none of them policemen--decide they need to uncover the truth.

Introducing the Homefront Sleuths:

  • Evie Harris, a newly arrived tea shop owner, seeking a fresh start after losing her husband.
  • Alice Greenleaf, the village herbalist, who has her own quiet strength and wisdom.
  • Blake Collins, a war-wounded schoolteacher, struggling with the scars of battle.
  • Harry Jenkins, a sharp-eyed retired detective from London, who thought his sleuthing days were over.
  • Dotty Baker, a resourceful young mother, juggling the demands of wartime life.

Together, they will form a close-knit circle, a found family in a world turned upside down. As they dig into the village’s secrets, they uncover more than just the identity of a killer—they discover the power of friendship and community in the face of adversity. But can they solve the mystery before the shadows of war claim another victim, and will Evie discover her inner culinary capabilities?

Loved all of the memories of the war, great writing, narration was good and the story had plenty of twists and turns.

American phrases and words inappropriately used and obviously aimed at readers not from England or aware of 1940s.

Awful Americanisms - ‘casket, schoolyard, reached out’ - plus many more words not used in England.

A lovely story with interesting characters that had a back story. I can't waitvto see if the next book follows their lives.

it was just a lovely story

I enjoyed the little end chapter of notes about the historical details used and what the people actually did with the items mentioned.

I enjoyed the historical accuracy of the book and how well it brought environment and feelings to life

The sleuths are all great characters, bringing something different to the (literal) table and the villains are also good. The story too develops nicely. I look forward to the next.

Great sleuths

Very likeable characters in a credible setting, I’d like to hear more … moving on to The Spitfire Murders

Very easy listening. Characters are interesting enough to make you care but slightly predictable in their storylines and actions.
Hope there are sequels

A fun story

Very easy to listen to and I loved being transported back to the 1940s, getting a glimpse of what it was like to live in the country during the war.
Like some have mentioned, there are a few Americanised words, but with the authors being American is makes sense, although doesn't fit in with old war time England. I thought the narration seems a little slow at first, but it's easy to get used to and doesn't ruin the story. Will be listening to the next one!
