Summary

From two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo and two-time Caldecott Medalist Sophie Blackall comes a fantastical meditation on fate, love, and the power of words to spell the world.

We shall all, in the end, be led to where we belong. We shall all, in the end, find our way home.

In a time of war, a mysterious child appears at the monastery of the Order of the Chronicles of Sorrowing. Gentle Brother Edik finds the girl, Beatryce, curled in a stall, wracked with fever, coated in dirt and blood, and holding fast to the ear of Answelica the goat. As the monk nurses Beatryce to health, he uncovers her dangerous secret, one that imperils them all - for the king of the land seeks just such a girl, and Brother Edik, who penned the prophecy himself, knows why.

And so it is that a girl with a head full of stories - powerful tales-within-the-tale of queens and kings, mermaids and wolves - ventures into a dark wood in search of the castle of one who wishes her dead. But Beatryce knows that, should she lose her way, those who love her - a wild-eyed monk, a man who had once been king, a boy with a terrible sword, and a goat with a head as hard as stone - will never give up searching for her, and to know this is to know everything. With its timeless themes, unforgettable cast, and magical medieval setting, Kate DiCamillo’s lyrical tale is one for all ages.

Masterful storytelling

Kate DiCamilla is one of my favorite authors. Her masterful use of voice and storytelling is unmatched. This particular story weaves a fairy-tale worthy setting (kings and castles. swords and dungeons)with lovely, unique characters ( including a goat you'll wish was your best friend) and a journey to find home and family. Share it with your favorite child today.

Luminous and Illuminating

Beatryce, ten years of age, once dwelt in a castle by the sea with her fearless lady mother, her mischievous younger brothers and their beloved tutor. When humble Brother Edik finds her, huddled next to the monastery's most capricious goat, the child is bloody and delirious, with no memory of how she came to be there. She is also the child named in a prophecy, and as such, is being hunted. Their kingdom, ruled by a foolish king controlled by an evil advisor, is war- torn and abounding in perils, especially in the Dark Wood. But soon, the reclusive monk, the fierce and uncompromising goat and the endangered, wondrous child they protect will cross paths with a questing, orphaned boy, a tree- dwelling former monarch and a circling bee. Together, armed with a sword, the power of knowledge, story, and stubborn, steadfast love, they will journey through the Dark Wood to fulfill their mission to change the kingdom for the better.

Lyrically, beautifully told, as is DiCamillo' s gift, and as elegantly narrated, this is a grand old- style proper fairy tale , verging on the mystical and spiritual, a parable and a play, brimful of royalty and wood- dwellers, questing pilgrimage, blood, sinister shadows, glorious light, shape shifting wolf- kings, mermaids and talking beasts. And as is customary in DiCamillo' s books, while no one is spared tragedy, love overcomes and heals in the end.

We will all find our way home

This was such a good book and the ending is so perfect for the time we are in with people wanting to know what’s going to happen which causes us fear. If we will just let Love be our guide. Another wonderful book by Kate Dicamillo!

Weird story and pacing

Normally love Kate DiCamillo, but this story was so hard to follow and get into. Not a good pick for kids fyi. Good performance by the narrator.

What a heartwarming story narrated perfectly.

I truly could not stop listening until the very end. All the danger and mystery came together in the well-told ending. I fell in love with all the characters who, if one thinks about it, are a bit like a parable of some I know of today. I will delight in listening to it many times. It makes my journey bearable. Kudos to the author, the publisher, the narrator, and all who put their efforts toward bringing this wonderful story to life.

Highly recommend this Audible edition!

Finty’s reading is like poetry. As life intervened in my listening, I found it very difficult to leave the lilting voice that was gifting words to my ears. A most pleasurable listen for all ages!
