Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Battle of the Atlantic, written and read by Jonathan Dimbleby.

The Battle of the Atlantic was - though often overlooked - crucial to victory in the Second World War. If the German U-boats had prevailed, the maritime artery across the Atlantic would have been severed. Mass hunger would have consumed Britain, and the Allied armies would have been prevented from joining in the invasion of Europe. There would have been no D-Day.

Through fascinating contemporary diaries and letters from the leaders and from the sailors on all sides, Jonathan Dimbleby creates a thrilling narrative that uniquely places the campaign in the context of the entire Second World War.

Challenging conventional wisdom on the use of intelligence and on Churchill's bombing campaign, The Battle of the Atlantic tells the epic story of the decisions that led to victory and the horror and humanity of life on those perilous seas.

Fantastic

Insightful and completely change my understanding of The Battle of the Atlantic. Very matter of fact and a seemingly unbiased view of the campaign. worth listening too.

Excellent record of the history and well narrated

Really well written and read. Was concerned Dimbleby would be to bias to the UK narrative but they get the fair grubbing for the utter failures as well as successes.
Sad to think if the personalities and stupidity had been stopped in 40/41 and air over was in place for 42/43 how many millions would have been saved.

A very enjoyable listen

Minor recording errors which could be easily edited. Otherwise a really well thought argument and balanced view, an author able to link tactical actions, operational level design and the strategic context - few able to this. Impressive.

Excellent

Great job Mr Dimbleby. I enjoyed this book very much, well written and read. Many events I had no knowledge of.

Great telling of events. Issue with narration

So I am writing this only 5 chapters in and am really struggling to continue! Only thing that is keeping me listening is the book itself as it is very well put together so far. My issue is the narrator who is also the author. My issue is the narrators constant noises of mouth movements the sound of swallowing and saliva and teeth smacking! The one thing in my life I can’t stand is these things listed and actually winds me up.

I will continue and try get through it with a lower volume or only listening via a speaker and not headphones. If I fail I will for sure have to buy the book to finish it.

Dimbleby, execllent writer, not such a good reader

This is an excellent account of this war of attrition, often overlooked, but the key to determining the outcome of the Second World War. Jonathan Dimbleby successfully combines the factual account, based upon the vast archive of documentary evidence, with the human stories of individuals caught up in the conflict - servicemen, merchant sailors and members of the public. What is staggering is the scale of the destructive waste of ships, of cargoes and of people killed, and the failures of the wartime leaders on all sides. I had never before appreciated the sheer blindness of Churchill and Roosevelt to the extent to which the German U-boats had the opportunity to bring about the defeat of the UK right up to the early months of 1943. Thank heavens that the German leaders also made catastrophically bad decisions. It was also staggering to learn that the Germans were successfully breaking British Admiralty codes more successfully than Bletchley Park was breaking Enigma. So this book is a great modern retelling of this crucial period in our history, but it is let down somewhat by Dimbleby's narration and inconsistent pronunciation of German words and military ranks, together with a poor technical recording which result in audible paper rustling and chair creaking. Another reader could have brought this excellent book more vividly to life.

Excellent book

Informative, well written, well read - just what you would expect from Jonathan Dimbleby.

Only thing that let it down a little was the editing - hadn't edited out his mid-readings ("sorry, I'll dead that again..." type moments), and at least one place where the reading actually seemed to have been garbled during editing.

Informative, thrilling, heart-breaking

This account of Battle of the Atlantic is both deeply fascinating and well-written, by turns looking at the grand strategy of the conflict and the individual stories and personalities that struggled in it.

The audio recording is slightly marred by inexplicably poor editing, as though it were rushed, but these issues are very occasional indeed.

A comprehensive and fascinating account

I already knew much about the battle for the Atlantic and other aspects of WWII. But this audio book - so well read by Jonathan Dimbleby - is, from start to end - a wonderful and fascinating account. I recommend it fully. I could quibble about some early mispronunciations and the like, but that would truly be mere quibbling. And I would have loved the final U-boat surrender to have included Montserrat's stirring account from The Cruel Sea - one of the most masterly passages of prose I've read anywhere. But...100% recommend. Thanks to Audible and to Jonathan Dimbleby.

Rule Britannia

The odd glitch in editing does not detract from what is an outstanding book
