About this listen

A CHILLING NORFOLK BROADS CRIME THRILLER!

A haunted crypt, a bullied boy, and an artist’s will: a benevolent gesture or a satanic curse?

When the body of a local artist is found mutilated inside a five-pointed star, DCI Tanner’s attention turns to the disciples of a Satanic cult. But when the man's body is discovered to be the cult’s leader, Tanner's interest is soon drawn to his will, and the five beneficiaries who’ve been named in it.

Set within the mysterious beauty of the Norfolk Broads, this fast-paced British detective series is a dark cozy Norfolk murder mystery with a slice of humour and a touch of romance, one that will have you guessing until the very end, when the last shocking twist is finally revealed.

The Bastwick Testament is a totally addictive gripping crime thriller, the twelth in a chilling series of serial killer books, ones which will rapidly convert followers of L J Ross, Faith Martin, Joy Ellis, Damien Boyd, J M Dalgliesh, and Elly Griffiths into David Blake devotees.

I enjoy the stories but they are spoiled by the authors poor research and knowledge of facts, procedures, and the geography of Norfolk. The new narrator is different and I’m still deciding what I think, warming to them.

Good story but lazy research which spoils all the stories

Enjoyed this book. Have read all in the series. And the change of narrator also was excellent.

The narrator was excellent

Another brilliant book in this series. The story, set in the run up to Christmas, was interesting and very twisty. As always there is plenty of humour. The ending took me completely by surprise, which doesn't happen very often, so bravo Mr Blake!

When I heard that this book had a different narrator to the previous books in the series I was horrified. . After all, Jonathan Keeble is a hard act to follow.. But Peter Wicks did a fantastic job. The voices he gave to the main characters were similar to Keeble's so I soon got used to the new narrator..

A surprise ending

I found the change of narrator very off putting. It just doesn’t sound like Tanner any more. Tanner now has a bit of a slow drool and it seems to impact on the personality. Overall this affected my enjoyment of the story. I thought the story was okay but not as good as some of the others earlier in the series. Les’s of Christine throughout was a good thing though!

John Tanner is dead and comes back as another man!

Difficult, but not because of the new narrator. The dialogue was so very slow, so needed speeding up and the so called wit and sarcasm which was so childish, became almost unbearable. Not sure I’d bother with another. Not a good one from David Blake.

I found The Bastwick Testament difficult to get through.

I really missed the normal narrator. This one did a good job but I loved the voices before.

Where is my narrator?

Characterisation and plot were unpredictable and fairly realistic. I want to continue to read subsequent Tanner exploits.

Pursuit of the yacht in the rescue boat.

Another brilliant story from David Blake Whilst it was Jonathan Keeble I really enjoyed Peter Wicks narration. I thought he brought Tanner’s character and the others alive. Look forward to more Tanner books with Peter narrating.

Excellent all round

I’ve been a fan of the DI Tanner series for a while, and I was really looking forward to The Bastwick Testament recent release. However, the experience was slightly marred by the change in narrator. Peter Wicks does a perfectly fine job, but his portrayal of Tanner felt quite different from the character I’ve come to know and love. Tanner’s personality seemed to have taken an unexpected shift, almost as if he had undergone a personality transplant.

While I appreciate the narrator’s efforts, this change in voice and tone significantly impacted my enjoyment of the story. I found myself distracted by the unfamiliar portrayal, which made it harder to connect with the characters and the narrative.

I’m still fond of the series and the plot, but unless this narrator changes, I’m afraid I won’t be continuing with the series. It’s a shame, but the change in narration really took me out of the experience. Bring back Jonathan Keeble! His narration was such an integral part of what made the DI Tanner series so enjoyable, and I really miss his portrayal of the character.
