Summary

After years of adventuring around the globe – running, kayaking, hitchhiking, exploring – Beau Miles came back to his block in country Victoria. Staying put for the first time in years, Beau developed a new kind of lifestyle as the Backyard Adventurer. Whether it was walking 90km to work with no provisions, building a canoe paddle out of scavenged scrap, or running a disused railway line through properties, blackberry thickets, and past inquiring police officers, Beau has been finding ways to satisfy his adventurous spirit close to home.

This book is about conscious experimentation with adventure, making meaning and inspiration out of tins of beans, bits of rubbish, and elbow grease. Beau's backyard exploits are funny, authentic, insightful, and being copied all over the world.

YouTuber, new dad, and self-described oddball who needs to shower more, Beau is what happens when you cross Bear Grylls with Bush Tucker Man. With a PhD in outdoor education, a string of successful short films under his belt, and a boundless passion for discovery, Beau is the real deal.

Good listen

I enjoyed the book, it made me laugh/smile quite a bit but I definitely prefer Beau's films if I'm honest.

Amazing - as is everything that Beau puts out.

Absolutely superb Book. Beau delivers it amazingly and I listened to it all within a couple of days and was gutted when it finished.

The way Beau goes into details around some of his Youtube videos is great, and brings more depth and detail to already amazing stories.

Highly Recommended.

I’ve read this at least 5 times by now and still not sick of it

I’ve been a longtime fan of Beau Miles for years and when I saw he was in the works of writing his first book I knew it’d be good. What I wasn’t prepared for was just how good it would be.

Never before have I enjoyed a book so much that I buy it as an audiobook just so I can listen to it whilst I walk, run, work or even chop wood. Having Beau in my ear telling me of his insightful and refreshing views on the world and his adventures is like having your best friend with you all day. I highly recommend this book and if you haven’t already, check out his videos on YouTube.

What a book

After watching beau on YouTube over the years I was very much looking forward to this book. From start to finish it was entertaining, inspiring and enjoyable. The mixture of humour and story telling was perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys listening to an adventure, been on or planning one. this is the first book in a long time I was sad for it to end. A must read. A+

Insightful, though perhaps a little underwhelming having seen most of beaus videos

Beaus got a brilliant personality and voice, passion for life and way of putting things that was a little addictive to listen to, though I was reminded of the constructed nature of this book by lines I’ve heard straight from his videos, I don’t think a writer needs to spill their life onto a page to make things interesting, but in all it’s complexity in analysing adventure, it felt like a lecture that maybe ignored personal struggle and vulnerability. But accepting it for what it is, it’s the story of a backyard adventurer, so it’s a motivating, quirky and entertaining listen that makes you look at your everyday with a little more excitement
