About this listen

In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man, David Martín, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books, and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner.

Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Close to despair, David receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to write a book unlike anything that has existed - a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realises that there is a connection between this haunting book and the shadows that surround his home.

Set in the turbulent 1920s, The Angel's Game takes us back to the gothic universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the Sempere & Sons bookshop, and the winding streets of Barcelona's old quarter, in a masterful tale about the magic of books and the darkest corners of the human soul.

The writing style is immersive and Zafon's ability to create a haunting atmosphere is exceptional. The characters are complex and multifaceted and their relationships are both intriguing and deeply emotional. The novel is a great blend of mystery, romance, and historical fiction and is a must-read for anyone who loves a good story. While the novel can be read as a standalone, readers who enjoyed "The Shadow of the Wind" will find this book to be a worthy follow-up but with a much darker and mysterious flavor. It's a captivating and engrossing novel that creates a plot that is intricately woven with many twists and turns, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end.
Highly recommended.

Throughly enjoyed this book. I came upon the author by accident, and have now listened to many more of his works. Dan Stevens is a fantastic narrator, I wish he did the majority available on here! Enjoy something a little different, it’s entirely worth the credit.

A beautiful mystery

I read the 'Shadow on the Wind' first, thank goodness or I would have been really confused. It was an interesting story, and you can follow the characters quite well, although I did get a little lost at the end. I loved the narrators voice, and could listen to him all day, he read it well and kept a good pace, but I plan on listening to it again sometime soon, both because I enjoyed it and to make sure I understood the reality from the fiction.

I am fully aware that there might be readers who think I might have been a bit harsh on this title but it's what I think. The story itself has very little real plot but plenty of atmosphere. It's fairly well written as well but the time line tends to gallop faster than the action so one finds oneself wondering how old David is now. The events appear to run sequentially but then years have apparently flown by. He's ill and then suddenly he's well again. Yet it's an illness of the brain so what happened? How far will you stretch credulity to believe in this gook's story line? The narator though is superb and I'd certainly look at any other book read by him. Still this book isn't bad though a mite disappointing in some aspects. It's very similar to 'Shadow of the wind' and even has some of the same features so if you didn't enjoy 'Shadow of the wind' then don't read this. If you did however then you might give this one a try.

He is a master of story telling. I could not wait to hear the next chapter. His stories are so unusual and they stir up a mixture of all kinds of emotions. Intrigue, excitment, dark and frightening, fear, love and happiness. Brilliant.

Wonderful and intriguing

I read the book a number of years ago and loved it. Listening to the audio version was thoroughly enjoyable but I think you’d have to be a fan of Zafón’s work to get the full appreciation of the story. For those not familiar I could see where there might be frustration with the plot. Beautifully written and well narrated by Dan Stevens

Step by step gripping

Layered and mysterious, with a wonderful backdrop of 1920/30s Barcelona. You’re pulled along by unfolding events and challenged by the complexity of trying to understand what’s real.

Engrossing and complex

The whole series is spectacular. I remember the first time I read it I was ever so slightly disappointed as it wasn't Shadow of the Wind part 2. however, upon reading it again it's just fantastic. I'm going through the whole series again and they're just amazing. can't recommend them all enough.

The Angel's Game is the second book in The Cemetery of Lost Books series. It's an impressive work and one of my most favourite series. It covers a period of around 6 decades in its entirety. It's set in Barcelona and allows the reader a glimpse of the past, in its elegance and and it's poverty. It's joy and its sadness. Its love and it's hatred.

When I read the first book,
The Shadow of the wind, I was hooked like an addict looking for my next fix.

I've now read all four books and still wanted more, so now I'm working my way through them again but this time in audiobook form. They've lost nothing in the narration, in fact they've come even more alive.

If you decide to give Carlos Ruiz Zafon's books a go, I suggest you start at the beginning with The Shadow of the Wind and follow this incredible journey to the end. You won't regret it.

I just wish the BBC would turn it into four gripping TV series.
Only the BBC could do this justice, without any interruption of adverts.
Personally I think it's a masterpiece but whether I'm right or wrong, only you can decide.
