Summary
Three women form an unbreakable bond in a sexy, suspenseful, and adventurous novel about empowerment and sisterhood through thick and thin.
Venus McGee, Draya Carter, and Jackie Benson are coworkers with a lot in common. They’re smart, independent, driven, and deserving of recognition - certainly more than they’ve been handed by a demoralizing boss. He’s the topic of conversation at their impromptu get-together after the company holiday party, where the threesome fantasizes about a life without him. There has to be an alternative to taking a deep breath and sucking it up. There is. It’s just not the one they expected.
When morning comes, Venus, Draya, and Jackie are blindsided by murder - a twist of fate that brings a startling new challenge to the table and forces them to navigate a hair-raising detour they never saw coming. For better and (unless they can help it) for worse, it’s going to turn their world upside down. What starts as a necessary bond of mutual trust soon morphs into an empowering and galvanizing friendship that Venus, Draya, and Jackie need now more than ever.
Critic reviews
“This is Homicide: Life on the Streets meets 9 to 5 meets Bridgerton in a story that screams to become a TV series. Part thriller and part mystery, this delightful story of friendship also celebrates sex, love, and family.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Arthur develops each of her main characters so well that readers will root for them all.”—Library Journal
“Comical, unique, and heartfelt…The After Party is a smart, tantalizing feat you won’t want to put down.”—Shondaland

I am only a few chapters in and I cannot . . .
I understand that this is fiction but the decisions made by these three college-educated women are beyond fiction.
I just could not suspend my disbelief long enough to enjoy this book. Common sense did not prevail in the main characters.
I love Bahni Turpin but her narration could not save this book for me.

Bad Decision After Bad Decision
Before purchasing, I had read someone else’s review noting their frustration with the characters and their constant bad decisions. That reviewer said they couldn’t even finish it. At the time, I didn’t think much of the review and went ahead with buying. However, I can now fully understand where that reviewer was coming from.
I was able to finish the book but by the second half, I found myself feeling frustrated with their reasoning and rationalizing of making bad decisions over and over again. It didn’t feel relatable necessarily… I mostly just felt annoyed with each of them.
And while I liked the female friendship and support that underpins the story… it simply wasn’t quite enough to make up for the above endless poor decisions.

Be careful what you wish for!
loved it! It was very suspenseful, up until the end you did not know who was doing the killing and who was behind it.

Meh
I started so I had to finish. I always enjoy this Narrator so I figured I’d give it a try. The story isn’t bad, but it seemed a little unrealistic and more like a BET movie. I did enjoy listening to the friendship begin and evolve between the ladies.

Unique depiction of "sistah-ly" love
Unique storyline and characters, in that all of the characters are clearly different, and it is easy to hear that in the recording whether the narrator forgets to modulate their voices properly or not. This does happen a few times. It sounded confusing when I wasn't following along in the book. Fantastic read and mysterious until the end, as well as humorous and unapologetically Black and female.

EPIC
I’m so sad I let this book stay on my TBR for so long, too long! This was an excellent mystery with some great love scenes in it. This book was narrated to perfection and definitely worth every minute.

Beautiful tale of friendship
I had a hard time in the beginning following along with the characters and who was who. The story began a little slow and I almost gave up. But when I realized the story was about the developing friend of three women and not a suspense mystery I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I wish to have friendships like theirs. The narration could have been a bit faster paced but was well done with all the characters involved.
