No, Mr.Michaels, it's you who doesn't understand.
When first I read the synopsis blurb given for this book, I was immediately excjted: I really enjoy legal stories, especially those with a psychological twist. So I requested Tattered Wings via Audiobook Boom, and was generously, and freely, gifted a complimentary copy by the rights holder. Thank you.
Unfortunately, the blurb was misleading. There is a legal case, that of a teenager being charged with multiple murder, but the book is mostly concerned with a divorce lawyer, Ian Michaels, who takes on the criminal defense, his own anger issues and his cheating on his wife of 20 something years with his secretary. Had this aspect been entwined into his attempts to find out why the youth had committed the crimes of which he was accused - there was never a doubt in his defence lawyer's mind that he did it - that would have been fine. But it was the other way around. The case of murderous youth and his background being mostly a mere vehicle to carry the story of the lawyer's infidelity, his angsting over his feelings, his occasional guilt and his apparent solution to everything: go out for a good meal with one of his women or a big breakfast with a friend
Had this book been reduced in length by around four hours, it could have been interesting and thought provoking. As it is, it becomes mostly the internal justifications of a thoughtless, self satisfied middle aged man (who loves his wife, mother of his three children, but is no longer 'in love' with her - so that's all right then!) to continue a long term affair which hurts both of the women in his life. Some readers will obviously enjoy this. Sadly, this reader is not one of them.
Narration by William Reece was good, if a little downbeat, unsurprising given the story line, but he followed the text well, injecting emotional emphasis where this was most needed.
This is not a bad book, merely miss advertised. I expect that many will find it absorbing as every little introspective guilt, self recognition and past recollection is repeatedly squeezed out of Michaels. But for those looking for a good legal thriller will have to dig deep to find it here.

Love, lust, Lawyers and murdering Loonies.
A jump out of my normal reading here, I can't always live with Wizzards and Dragons so felt a change in order. Although a massive shift change I found this book well written and easy to follow as I journeyed into the world of Law and the penal system, Perhaps my change in reading spoiled my ability to feel the emotions in our main character, as his marriage fails and he explores new passions,, Susan Keen kept me wondering the fate of a young boy/ man on death row, whilst the love triangle flourished. The story brought to life narrated by William Reese kept my focus throughout.
A clever read with an ACTAL ENDING who hooooo. but not telling. Jim nn
