After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts, until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since the land has belonged to man and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated. It was prophesized that someday the demons would return, and only the descendants of Ramrowan would be able to defeat them. They became the first kings, and all men served those who were their only hope for survival.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Summary
Larry Correia, the New York Times best-selling author of the wildly popular Monster Hunter International and Grimnoir Chronicles series of no-holds-barred urban fantasy and the Dead Six trilogy of military adventure novels, now sets his sights on the short story form.
Together for the first time, 14 action-packed tales of demons, monsters, vampires, and cosmic horrors too terrible to name - and the men and women who take them all down. Oh, and toss in an interdimensional insurance salesman for good measure.
You'll also find: An elven princess from the pages of Monster Hunter International on a mission to redeem her people. A samurai pirate with a blood vendetta against an extremely large sea beast. And a magic-wielding PI who walks the mean streets of Detroit.
Journey back to the origins of Monster Hunter International in "Bubba Shackleford's Professional Monster Hunters". Uncover the origin of one of Dead Six's central characters in "Sweothi City". And celebrate the holidays with the Grimnoir Chronicle's own Jake Sullivan in "Detroit Christmas".

I tired, I really did
Correia is my favorite contemporary author and I’ve enjoyed almost everything he’s put out. But I could not get past the narrator on this one.
I know this isn’t a dramatized audio book, but there is some balance between narrating and performance I was expecting, especially with characters from stories where the same narrator was used.
Sands was clear and articulate, but it sounded like he was reading directions out of a manual.
I even fast-forwarded to different chapters to make sure I wasn’t being purely reactive, but just couldn’t enjoy it. Would’ve been better to have had the past narrators from their respective audio books.

I...just...couldn't...finish
Sorry Larry, you lost potential fans because the narrator was terrible. I am afraid new readers (listeners) won't get the opportunity to appreciate your work. I have listened to several Correia books & love his sence of quirkieness & his story telling. Sadly, Basil Sands ruined these stories. I do not know Mr Sands & am sure he is a great guy but he should not be reading any books to anyone. I probably couldn't do much better but that is why I listen to books & don't apply for work narrating books.
