About this listen

When Jon attends the premier of his movie in the Lansing Film Festival, he faces the most important weekend of his young life, but not in ways he expected. His old pal, Vince, has been stewing for a decade and their high school friend, Amy, is now the assistant district attorney in Lansing. Edgy humor gives way to fiery confrontation that examines memory and perception.

Editor reviews

Slightly longer than a one-act, Tape is the dramatized story of three high school acquaintances whose reunion reignites old tensions and new conflict. Produced by L.A. Theatre Works, Tape features incredible performances from new and established actors. William Mapother stands out in particular, starring as Vince, disgruntled old-time friend of Jon (played by Josh Stamberg). Stamber and Mapother are astute at recreating the uncomfortable feeling of old friends who might still hold a grudge or two…

Excellently Performed

If you like well-acted, character-driven plays then this is well worth a listen and highly recommended.
I first saw the film which reunited "Dead Poet Society" cast Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawk and his then-wife, Uma Thurman. I thought it was a brilliantly acted and underrated film. Then I saw this on Audible and gave it a go and it is equally well-done. All 3 cast members act this extremely well. Best go in blind but SPOLIER-ish synopsis below.

A brief synopsis of the story: The play is entirely in real-time. 2 high school friends, John and Vincent have a reunion in a motel when one is in town to showcase his film entering the Lancing Film Festival. John is successful, polite, and seemingly well-turned-out. Vincent is an enematic, honest, and funny drug dealer who is a voluntary fireman, seemingly unsuccessful. They talk about old times. Vincent presses his friend about a night in high school when he hooked up with his former girlfriend, Amy, and the play develops friction when Vincent tapes the conversation and invites Amy to the reunion to discuss it. The play takes on a darker topic but is it Vincent's insecurity and competitiveness with John talking or is there a dark underside to John? Only Amy has the answers. What happened that night......?
