Story
From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club....

When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved - plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a (sort-of) regular teenager.

Summary
A New York Times best seller
Winner of the GoodReads Choice Awards 2017 for Humour
In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.
In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits 'pause' for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, 'Did you, um, make it?' She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood ('Strangers were worried about me; that's how long I was single!'), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway ('It's like I had a fashion-induced blackout').
In 'What It Was Like, Part One', Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay 'What It Was Like, Part Two' reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later and what doing so has meant to her.
Some more things you will learn about Lauren: she once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres; she's aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls ('If you're meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you've already set the bar too high'); and she's a card-carrying REI shopper ('My bungee cords now earn points!').
Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cosy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and - of course - talking as fast as you can.

Thin Puff Piece
Even as a fan of Gilmore Girls I thought this was a bit thin. There isn't much of interest here, you don't really get a sense of how she felt about other actors or what they were really like. it was all just gushingly wonderful. Also not being able to see the pictures that are referred to really dents your enjoyment. Disappointing.

I love her but this was boring
Not what I thought it would be. If you are a super fan of Lauren Graham or want to get into acting then this might be worth a listen but overall it was just lacking. The story jumps back and forth from before and after Gilmore Girls, melding time frames together. Tid bits about her life as a struggling actress and small, shallow insights into her life on set of Gilmore girls wasn't enough to keep me listening. There was that classic Lauren Graham humor - dry and sarcastic - which was great but maybe too much? Making it seem a bit forced.

So incredibly special
What made the experience of listening to Talking as Fast as I Can the most enjoyable?
There are so many things that made listening to this book enjoyable. I would have to say Lauren's reading is a massive factor, and the level of detail she goes into in all of the right places. If you love Gilmore Girls, you HAVE to listen to this book.
What other book might you compare Talking as Fast as I Can to, and why?
I couldn't compare this book to any other biography/non-fiction. Lauren should have her own genre. It's funny, emotional, interesting and beautiful.
What does Lauren Graham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Lauren's delivery of her own jokes and asides is superb, and yes, she really does talk fast! But in a good, excited way; the way that we have all come to love through Lorelai. I don't think anything beats hearing a writer read their own story, because they understand it more than anyone else, it brings emotion to the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Lauren talks about filming "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life", I cried almost every time she said she cried. It was so moving, but don't listen when you're driving - you won't be able to see for the tears, and you might "move" into a wall.
Any additional comments?
I love Lauren Graham.

Real life Lorelai
Such a great audiobook and the stories mean much more when narrated by the author herself. Listening to Lauren Graham talk about her experiences shooting all 7 seasons of Gilmore girls felt like I was part of the story. The parallels between her and Lorelai were evident from just her writing style. 10/10 would recommend!
