In the wake of tragedy, neither Lazlo nor Sarai are who they were before. One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep. Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice - save the woman he loves or everyone else? - while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. But is she? Sometimes, only the direst need can teach us our own depths, and Sarai, the muse of nightmares, has not yet discovered what she's capable of.

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she's a 17-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in 'Elsewhere', she has never understood Brimstone's dark work - buying teeth from hunters and murderers - nor how she came into his keeping. Summary
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around - and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it.
Then a stunning opportunity presents itself in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever. What happened in Weep 200 years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving? The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries - including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?
In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times best-selling Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

OMG - please hurry up with book 2
Where does Strange the Dreamer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best books I can ever remember.
What did you like best about this story?
Modern dilemmas in a total mythical situation. It shows the good intentions off all the characters, even the bad ones.
Have you listened to any of Steve West’s other performances? How does this one compare?
The best kind of narration; you forget about the narrator and are just there.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh, cry and scream at the characters in frustration.
Any additional comments?
I actually shouted out "No" at the cliffhanger.

Beautiful.....straight onto next book immediately!
This is the first book of Laini's that I have encountered & I loved it! I'm ancient, 48...& prefer to be immersed in books that bear no resemblance to our reality the older I get. I really enjoyed the imaginative world she has created & adore the characters. I've laughed out loud, gasped, shouted, cried & smiled. I listened to this in 1.5days & I'm starting the next book which continues the story, 2 seconds after I press send on this review!

Rich storytelling
Love this book and the way Laini Taylor creates her own, very unique, myths, monsters and gods.
Personally I'm not that enthralled by how much romance/passion there is in there (I think a bit enhances it) but it doesn't put me off enjoying the story.

There is no greater storyteller in all the land...
There is only one author whose books I don’t dare to purchase until her series is completed... Laini Taylor is that author. And the minute Muse Of Nightmares was released, I began Strange The Dreamer.
From her very first word until well past the last, you will be enthralled in her enchantments, reveling in her exquisitely created worlds and plummeting into love with her realer than life characters. There is no greater storyteller in all the land... and she only entrusts her dreams on a page to the best of best. Steve West dazzles here!

Good fantasy elements in a YA book
The fantasy of the book and the mystery is engaging, but unfortunately the romance distracts from it. The author goes full purple when describing the kissing scenes and it drags on forever. Started the second book, but the “impossible question” wasn’t believable or impossible to me and made me instantly dislike the main character, and the mystery of the second book was obvious from the first chapter. Could be an issue of expectation. I started the series thinking it would be pretty high fantasy, but it is more YA

Meandering but great
Wonderful book with some minor flaws. It had a pacing problem towards the end, where it also started pumping out clichés left and right. Dialogue, while always great to listen to, would sometimes linger on something longer than it needed.
Characters were all wonderful. It's impressive how much one can empathise with the main antagonist whilst also loathing them. There is one notable exception here.
**STORY SPOILER**
The main characters empathy towards the godsborn when told about what the godslayer did to them, while in character, made him totally forget about the suffering the people of weep had to endure under the Gods and it was very weird how he totally flipped on an issue when another character blatantly told him about the issue and how much it troubled them.

An enjoyable read.
A good read, personally I felt like the flowery writing didn't bother me, and it actually felt like a breath of fresh air compared to some other books that I've read recently. Characters were decently developed but unfortunately the romance felt very rushed compared to all of the other elements of the book. This also kind of derailed the story for a pretty good chunk, where I feel like other elements should have been just as, if not more important?

I am completely blown away. What a beautiful story and the way it is told. Flowing like a melody or a river, every word weighted and prerequisite. It fillled my soul with joy and sadness, and left me speechless. You rarely come across a book that consumes you. And the narration was so good, spot on. This book is trully a masterpiece.

Half baked
First if all, Steve West is always good. That was not the problem.
The problem with this book is that it starts of great, struggles with where to go from there and finally ends it all with a cliffhanger, leaving the listener annoyed, rather than intrigued.
Not recommended.
