Summary

A five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story - and why doing so matters.

Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.

Not great.

I was hoping for some lessons in how to tell stories however this to me was just a guy telling his stories, which were not that great

Too author-centric with little advice

I liked the bits about mindfulness, homework for life as the author states but that's pretty much it. The book is way too long for what it is, a bunch of stories by Dicks which makes it an autobiography. I found little real advice in this to improve my stories, more could be learned from a ten minute Youtube video.
Also the author comes off as really self-obsessed, even narcissistic which just made me question his authority. I also want to add that the stories he tells are hardly interesting, I mean sure he can make mundane things remotely interesting by being overly verbose about them. What made me cringe the most hearing his stories was the fact that he always ends them in a way that the listener either feels pity for his oh-so-sad childhood or the aww-effect when Matt is being such a sweet husband. The stories sounded like an ultimate pick-me directed towards one's in-laws. Also the narrator (Matt) has a really annoying voice.

How NOT to tell stories

I can't believe how boring this is. I was hoping to get something from this book but instead I just got bored.

Could have and should have been shorter

It’s a good book, with really valuable tips and advice. However, this should have been about half the length it is.

Homework of Your Life

Incredibly interactive from the word go! Thoughtful and well-written. I've already begun using the story techniques.

Not what I expected.

The audiobook started out nicely with the foreword by Dan Kennedy. However as soon as main author starts speaking I could't concentrate. I found his voice very difficult to listen to, but despite that I gave it some time to see if I just had to get used to it. Quickly did I also find that this is mostly just a guy telling stories about himself. Not at all what I purchased the book for.

Fantastic Book

The bad reviewer is a fool (as aforementioned).

Great content in this book with a few lightbulb moments around developing and structuring stories. Good for personal and business interactions!

Some Good Tips

I can see why the author has had a tough life. He comes across as more of a whiner than Prince Harry. Quite an accomplishment. I am not surprised he was bullied in Band Camp - for real hazing he should have played football. That aside, there are some very good tips that could have been distilled down to one page.

Amazing insights, highly entertaining

The author knows his subject insight out and uses his own craft to teach the craft. I am tempted to take one of his workshops

The bad reviewer is a fool.

I’ve listened to quite a few audio books and this is easily one of my favourites.

Not only is it easy listening, but I found lots of really useful pieces of info and instructions.

I’m very thankful for this book.

not many tips on how to deliver a good story

The author spends most of the book telling stories about himself, which in my opinion are not the greatest stories. he gives some tips on how to tell a good story, but that's just a very small part of the content. I stopped listening around chapter seven as I didn't find the content to be that great

There are better books On Story then this

5 second portion was the only real take away. Maybe homework for life, but I cannot not see myself revisiting or endorsing this book, so it's a return for me. There are a lot of stories and you can tell the authors a good guy, who's trying to help. Great business model, but I didn't actually get or learn much after spending 8 hours with him. Here's the thing, telling stories is a huge to my business. I wanted to like it, but cannot. You want the real low down in less time? Get "Stories That Stick" instead and invest your credit elsewhere. If you are going to do a moth slam or contest, sure, but if you're just telling stories to friends, or for business Stories That Stick hands down. YMMV

This book leapt into my top 5

I've been listening to Audible books since 2015, and this is one of the most phenomenal books I've read.

Here's a short review: Don't wonder if you should get the book. Get the book.

his voice gave me a massive headache

I have no clue why, but for whatever reason, the preview clip didn't feel annoying, yet at a certain point, early in the book I realize that the guy's voice felt very scratchy and sharp and listening to it just gave me a headache. Deciding to return for this reason, voice definitely not a match for me!

Thought provoking

Best thing I can say is this, it's makes you want to be a storyteller. His belief that if you are in front of people and not engaging them, then you are stealing their time, is thought provoking.

Quite insightful, but doesn't get into "the why"

I liked it a lot, but I feel like many recommendations don't go into the "why" of why humans prefer one type of story or way to tell the story over another way. He just tells you people like this, not that... insightful nonetheless.

Disappointed.

I was hoping to learn what it takes to be a world class storyteller, not listen to an autobiography.

Okay, that was good gotcha!

I seen Dan Kennedy’s name thinking it’s the Marketer Dan Kennedy and was surprise it was someone else in the writing space with that name.

The book is awesome and most of the stories that was told was awesome, I will have to go back to this book every six months or until I feel like I have this stuff down cold.

While, I’m not a writer I do blogging, and want to tell better stories in my copy.

The main thing I like about this book is its simple to understand their is no 67 steps or check list-

It’s just a clean cut direct path to here’s how to tell better stories and here’s the emotions you want to hit.

Like I said it was a good gotcha, I really enjoyed the book.

The only part I didn’t like or had to listen to again is when you was talking about the word “And” for what ever reason that threw me for a loop.

Oh, and some of the words you used made me smile because you used big words when it’s simpler easier words that’s more common place that the reader would have understood better.

Good job, I would definitely grab your next book.

Hint Hint...
