Summary
Series 1 and 2 of the hilarious radio sitcom starring Harry H. Corbett and Wilfred Brambell, adapted from the much-loved TV series.
Steptoe and Son ran for eight series on BBC TV and even spawned two feature films. Such was the series' popularity in the mid-1960s that the cast specially recorded several episodes for BBC radio.
Here, collected together for the first time, are all 21 episodes from the first and second radio series, scripted by Hancock's Half Hour creators Ray Galton and Alan Simpson and adapted by Gale Pedrick. Among the classic comic incidents in these timeless episodes, Albert's 65th birthday turns into a disaster; Harold finds love with a French girl; Albert is upset by Harold's plans for a proper bathroom; and the duo get an irresistible offer. Plus, Albert and Harold's creditors arrive seeking payment; two coffins lead to a burst of superstition; Harold regrets taking Albert to the cinema; and Albert disrupts Harold's Labour Party meeting.
The episodes included are 'The Offer'; 'The Bird'; 'Sixty-Five Today'; 'The Stepmother'; 'The Economist'; 'Wallah-Wallah Catsmeat'; 'The Diploma'; 'Steptoe à la Cart'; 'The Holiday'; 'The Bath'; 'The Lead Man Cometh'; 'A Musical Evening'; 'The Bonds That Bind Us'; 'The Siege of Steptoe Street'; 'Pilgrim's Progress'; 'The Wooden Overcoats'; 'Sunday for Seven Days'; 'The Piano'; 'My Old Man's a Tory'; 'Homes Fit for Heroes'; 'Crossed Swords'. Also included are two bonus features: a short 1966 Steptoe & Son sketch from The Ken Dodd Show and a selection of trailers prepared for overseas broadcast. Duration: 11 hours approx.

You know what you're getting
If you could sum up Steptoe & Son: The BBC Radio Collection in three words, what would they be?
Classic; Nostalgic; Excellent
What other book might you compare Steptoe & Son: The BBC Radio Collection to, and why?
Dad's Army
Which character – as performed by Harry H. Corbett and Wilfred Brambell – was your favourite?
The show doesn't work without both of them. So impossible to say
Any additional comments?
Really well crafted. Like many of this era, the timing is impeccable. It's the original RADIO series rather than TV adaptation so no issues with visual jokes missed. Great collection and well worth a download

sound quality comes and on iPad & Andriod
Would you consider the audio edition of Steptoe & Son: The BBC Radio Collection to be better than the print version?
this could have been a fantastic audiobook
its only let down has been every so often the sound quality drops well down to poor sound. I'd have understood if the both series were the same, considering the age, though in this day and age I'd have thought this would have been enhanced.
I've tried this on two different Android phones and an iPad and the same think
Any additional comments?
sound quality lets this down at times :(

An excellent collection
An excellent collection of the early radio series, with each episode lasting 30 minutes, which is about the time it takes me to travel to work. There are actually 45 chapters, with each chapter being 1 episode but the last 23 being one minute radio adverts which all could have been left off. However the is one additional gem of a short live stage sketch done at Blackpool with the appearance of Ken Dod. I've never heard this one before and was delighted with it

Excellent content with very variable audio quality
I always loved the TV show so coming to the radio shows for me was pretty easy. As with Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister the small cast size really helps these shows with instantly recognisable characters telling small scale stories being an easy translation to the audio book format.
If you didn't like the show you won't like this. If you haven't seen the tv show I would recommend watching that first.
There is serious issues with some of the audio here, this I assume is due to the reconstruction of the episodes using rescued footage due to the BBC deleting things in the past to reuse tape. You will therefore find yourself listening to a perfectly clear recording and all of a sudden you will get two lines that sound like a radio broadcast recorded on a dicta-phone in a thunder storm and then instantly return to perfect clarity audio. This can really disconnect you from what you are listening to and unfortunately effects most of the episodes on the collection.

Poor sound quality
Had memories of my dad watching this. Enjoyed much of the scripts. But the sound quality is very disappointing.

Classic Comedy....terrible recordings on occasion.
If you could sum up Steptoe & Son: The BBC Radio Collection in three words, what would they be?
Funny, Sad, Clever.

On the knocker i believe you call it.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
all of them.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
laugh yes, cry no. Stories are superbly writtern and acting is top notch.
Any additional comments?
The recordings drop to such low quality it was difficult to tell what was being said. This happens on a few occasions, but overall the quality was very good.
