Summary

Zoe Brown may have been voted Most Likely to Never Leave River Bend, but the paper-thin walls and suffocating air of her family's double-wide trailer were not what she wanted for her life. Other than BFFs Melanie and Jo, the only thing that kept Zoe sane during high school was her boyfriend, Luke.

She didn't just leave, she escaped - turning her back on the shame of her black-sheep siblings and imprisoned dad. Now a celebrity chef in Dallas, she can afford all the things she never could have growing up. But when she returns to rustic, ruggedly beautiful River Bend, Zoe has to face all that she abandoned - including Luke.

While Luke was a refuge for Zoe in the past, he knows they inhabit totally different worlds now. Anchored by his parents and his job as a mechanic in his father's shop, Luke never felt the urge to leave River Bend - until Zoe's return.

But when the two rekindle their old flame, Zoe is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: remain in River Bend and confront her past before it destroys her, or say good-bye to everyone she's ever loved...again, this time for good.

Good continuation of series

The H and h in this book had separated after a teenage romance, as the h wanted to escape her abusive background, whereas the H was happy and settled in their home town. Now the h was very successful, and after ten years apart they reunited without much conflict, apart from their geographical separation which they dealt with both rationally and sensibly. Everything was pretty smooth, but a happy romance does not make the most exciting reading.

Fortunately the book improves when the couple need to deal with conflict caused by the return of the h’s abusive father and the subsequent family problems this causes. This book was an interesting exploration of the dynamics of an abusive family environment and how people act and react in different ways. It also illustrates why some people escape abuse, whereas others seemed unable or unwilling to do so.

This was a slightly unusual romance, as the romance itself progressed fairly smoothly, and the more absorbing part of the book was how the recently reunited couple dealt with domestic and family issues. This book is the second in a series of three and although it could be read as a standalone, there were some plot strands weaving throughout the three books and I would definitely recommend reading the series in order. I am looking forward to book three.

I do have to finish my review with kudos to Ms Bybee for featuring an h who was career driven, highly successful, and very hard working, along with an H who was a small town mechanic, with no great ambition to be anything else. There was never any question of the h sacrificing her career progression to enable the romance to proceed, and it was lovely to see that the H only had pride and admiration for her achievements, along with the realisation that she would never have succeeded so well if she had done as he had wanted years before, and stayed with him in their home town.

Never give up

As a romance it was out of my normal genre but I love Catherine Bybee as a story teller. No great thrills and excitement but a really really good and enjoyable story written without the angst a lot of authors seem to need to make a story work. Most enjoyable and narrated brilliantly with great voice inflections . Highly recommended .
