Summary
In a New Mexico blizzard, four men cross a barbed-wire fence at Stallion Gate to select a test site for the first atomic weapon.

Not just Stallion Gate
I have been in love with Martin Cruz Smith's writing for many years. Now that I use audiobooks more than written works I have been waiting patiently for more of his works to come to audible but I don't think the publishers have given them a fair chance by not listening to them first. I am referring to all of his titles added by audible not just this one. The sheer beauty and originality of the prose in these works is often lost in unsympathetic narration. While the Renko novels are treasures, Stallion Gate has held a strong place in my heart from when I first read it years ago. It touches on so many subjects, many of them surely close to the author's heart, with the subtle touch of a true poet yet the legacy of what was done in reality still lingers in current times. Finally, without Joe Pena many of the strong, silent heroes of current fiction fame would probably not exist but Joe also has heart and soul and is surely a mirror of his land and people. Finally, the author's afterword still advertised on the cover is not present. Despite flaws in publications I will always continue to buy as it is Martin Cruz Smith but he deserves better from his publishers.

Great story, dreadful narration.
An atmospheric story, strong sense of place and a character finding his identity and place in his rapidly changing world. The purple prose style of narration is absolutley appaling, making it difficult ot concntrate on the content of the novel. I am a fan of this particular author and really enjoyed all the previous books I have both read and listened to, but the narration of this one made my toes curl. Over produced is the word that comes to mind, I would give it a minus star rating if that were possible. Nevertheless, a great 'read' .

Confusing.
Not one of his best. It's almost a story built from an idea, but never reached its full potential.
