Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Soul Music is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag; Vanity Fair; Quiz). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'This didn't feel like magic. It felt a lot older than that. It felt like music.'

Being sixteen is always difficult, but it's even more so when there's a Death in the family. Susan hasn't exactly had a normal upbringing, with a skeletal grandfather who rides a white horse and wields a scythe.

When Death decides he needs a well-earned break, he leaves Susan to take over the family business. The only problem is, everyone mistakes her for the Tooth Fairy…

Well, not the only problem. There's a new, addictive music in Discworld. It's lawless. It changes people. It's got a beat and you can dance to it.

It's called Music With Rocks In. And it won't fade away…

The Discworld novels can be listened to in any order, but Soul Music is the third book in the Death series.

The first book in the Discworld series—The Colour of Magic—was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

An absolute classic

I think this was the first Discworld novel I got brand new as it was released. Its certainly where I went from "I like these books" to "These are the best books ever written"
The story is an all time classic and is read brilliantly by Sian Clifford here.
She gives life to the characters, in particular The Band With Rocks In wonderfully and her take on Ridcully is pretty much exactly what I think of him as.
As always, Peter Serafinowicz nails Death and Bill Nighy's deadpan sarcasm is perfect for Terry's authorial footnotes.

A quest for hidden song titles

Another great audiobook interpretation from the treasury of the magnificent Discworld. Soul Music has long been one of my favourite STP novels. This one is brought brilliantly to mind and life by a combination of a strong story, superb narration, rock music references galore, and a personal quest to count as many hidden and hinted song titles as I could along the way. Excellent. (Michael).

So good

It’s always a relief when one of your favourites is looked after. Sian Clifford does a sparkling job as the lead narrator, getting Susan and Buddy so right. Serafinowizc is a brilliant death but what I really loved was the Geordie Glod. I’d never imagined this voice for him but it was absolutely perfect. I’ve now listened all the way through the witches, Small Gods and am nearly at the end of the Death series (2 to go) but not one of them has been less than a 4 star experience so far. I’m loving them!

Well narrated edition of a Pratchett classic

The narration is engaging and well paced. The story, as ever with Pratchett, entertains and makes you think about the world a little differently - the essence of good writing!!

Amazing

Really great production, narration and story. Highly recommended for listeners of all ages and a nice jumping off point into the Death stories if you don't fancy going all the way back to the beginning.

Good book but the narrator has a limited range of voices

Almost all the males characters were given the same Catherine Tate-esque voice, which really let the book down. Disappointing because I had waited ages for the new recordings to come out.

Narration could be better

Narrator spoke a bit too fast. I wanted to savour it. Alberts voice also didn’t match his personality. He sounded a bit Janet Street Porter, rather than lovely well educated butler.

Brilliant reading of a brilliant book

Sian Clifford gifts this book with a reading which fully lives up to the author’s incredible vision. I genuinely don’t think it could be improved.
