Summary

When is the last time you thought about the state of your soul? Best-selling author John Ortberg guides you through several practices to restore your soul so you can experience a life of wholeness, balance, and hope.

The health of your soul isn't just a matter of saved or unsaved. It's the hinge on which the rest of your life hangs. It's the difference between deep, satisfied spirituality and a restless, dispassionate faith.

In an age of materialism and consumerism that tries to buy its way to happiness, many souls are starved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false promises of status and wealth. We've neglected this eternal part of ourselves, focusing instead on the temporal concerns of the world - and not without consequence.

Including reflections from his decades-long relationship with his friend and mentor Dallas Willard, best-selling author John Ortberg presents another classic that will help you discover your soul - the most important connection to God there is - and find your way out of the spiritual shallow-lands to true divine depth. With characteristic insight and an accessible story-filled approach, Ortberg will help you connect more deeply with the God who gave you life and desires every day to bring more meaning, hope, and abundance to that life.

All good points but none I haven’t heard before

Dallas Willard and John Ortberg have really inspired and encouraged my faith and I would highly recommend their writings. However, having read quite a few of their books, I didn’t find this one added much to my understanding of their theology and key points. It is obviously important to Ortberg to express his respect and admiration for Willard, and he clearly mourns the loss of a close friend and mentor. However, as I listened to this book, I felt a little uncomfortable at the height of the pedestal on which he puts him!

Superb mind blowing book

This book is the best Ortberg book I have ever read. It is thought provoking, challenging and encouraging. I have read it twice and will go back to it again in the future. He quotes from many sources but in particular refers to the late Dallas Willard. As someone who is particularly interested in soul/spiritual care and pastoral care, I highly recommend it. It will bless and challenge in equal measure.

Dallas Willard for Dummies

I have read several of Dallas Willard's books. Some of them with friends who were equally intent on gleaning just some of the rich insights they presented. And we did, however always with some frustration and disappointment because we knew there was more.
John Ortberg has given people like me—and I know there are more—a gift. His account of his personal pilgrimage with Dallas as his mentor has afforded me a better understanding of some of the concepts I longed to understand from some of Dallas' writings.
Thank you, John. I mean no disrespect for the headline of this review...only gratitude.

Good Book - poor narrator

What did you like best about Soul Keeping? What did you like least?

Great Ideas - much of which are a summary of Dallas Willard's thoughts on Spiritual Formation. Ortberg is funny and has a great voice - it's too bad he did not narrate this audio book. It really detracted from his ideas that the narrator failed to capture his humor or proper emphasis.

Excellent, meditative, and challenging!

"You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life." This book not only delves into why but touches on how. An excellent read and read with excellence. Highly recommended.

It’s not what you achieve, it’s who you become.

Who have you become? The Christian journey is one of highs and lows. Unfortunately, it often starts on a low… then we experience wonderful seasons of optimism, success and abundance. Rarely does life let you stay there though. Those character flaws creep in and before we realize, we are living for self once more and not for God. Our soul and it’s condition get ignored, compromised and devalued.

This book brings the most important attribute that we must nurture to the forefront. Our soul is imperative to our daily walk. Our soul seeks to draw us closer to our creator. Our testimony is dependent on our will becoming God’s will. Our mind trusting the Lord & the it’s thoughts within refrain from deceit & fear. Our body doing the things we ought.
Our soul is ultimately what matters. When we perish, our bodies get buried, but our souls He keeps. (Or not)

Rarely taught in church, tending to the soul brings integrity and harmony into our lives. This book makes such good points to be considered. The Lords grace is everlasting. We should not waste a day on selfish desire but living to share the goodness of God.

7 friends came together to read this book on Monday nights. We see ourselves and one another w/ a newness of wonder and appreciation. All the life lessons I wish I had known in my youth could have avoided the plunder and heartache, had I understood how important our soul is and the impact it has unattended.

Forever changed after reading this book.

Take care of your Soul

Great reminder to take time to step away for fast, entertainment, over serving life to take time for the soul. This book is filled with great short stories and helpful insight on how God wants us to take time think, spend, and reflect and slow down our souls. To work on our soul is to be of better use to others.

Gets better the deeper into the book you go. I am going back to re-listen to some chapters and take notes.

Excellent insight into our souls.

Offers encouragement and guidance for nourishing our souls and a better understanding of what and who is primary in our lives. I am more able to seek and hear God's word when focusing on keeping my soul right with God.

Starts slow, ends well

I felt like the beginning took a long time establishing "what is the soul," but maybe that was helpful for some.
Last half was excellent and inspiring.
