What a confusing story

This started out as a seemingly straight forward story, then it got so complicated that it became silly. I do not like to be left with a cliff hanger so you have to buy the next book. I wish American authors would find an English person to proof read their stories for glaring errors. A housekeeper was a respected role and no way would they be expected to get up at 5 and light fires, there are also no snakes in England other than the adder which is rarely fatal and they also don't come out at night.
We had no idea who arranged for the special license and for what reason. It all just became a jumble. So disappointing
The story was not helped by the weaknes of the narrator who made no effort to distinguish between mens and womens voices also their narration was not strong enough to carry the story.
