Summary

Jennifer Fulwiler told herself she was happy. Why wouldn't she be? She made good money as a programmer at a hot tech start-up, had just married a guy with a stack of Ivy League degrees, and lived in a 21st-floor condo where she could sip Sauvignon blanc while watching the sun set behind the hills of Austin.

Raised in a happy, atheist home, Jennifer had the freedom to think for herself and play by her own rules. Yet, a creeping darkness followed her all of her life. Finally, one winter night, it drove her to the edge of her balcony, making her ask, once and for all, why anything mattered. At that moment, everything she knew and believed was shattered.

Asking the unflinching questions about life and death and good and evil led Jennifer to Christianity, the religion she had reviled since she was an awkward, skeptical child growing up in the Bible Belt. Mortified by this turn of events, she hid her quest from everyone except her husband, concealing religious books in opaque bags as if they were porn and locking herself in public bathroom stalls to read the Bible.

Just when Jennifer had a profound epiphany that gave her the courage to convert, she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition and the only treatment was directly at odds with the doctrines of her newfound faith.

Something Other Than God is a poignant, profound, and often funny tale of one woman who set out to find the meaning of life and discovered that true happiness sometimes requires losing it all.

Great book.

So interesting. I can't believe how quick I listened to it all. Didn't want it to end. It was a nice touch the author Jennifer narrated the book.

A really moving story, wonderfully told.

Jennifer Fulweiler captured my imagination with her account. I felt every emotion and was completely captivated as she took us on her voyage of discovery. My wife can't wait to read this story now.

Personal and addictive read

Very very personal and thoughtful account told with humour and humility by the author herself.

Beautiful conversion story!

Amazing conversion story! Solid apologetics couched in the real life experience of a former avowed atheist. Plus, the author has quite the talent for writing in an engaging and vivid style. Highly recommended!

Highly Recommend

This book is fun and honest. I enjoyed every minute of it immensely! An autobiography of someones journey to Catholicism and how life never seems to become less complex, but with a bit of humor and faith in the Lord peace is near.

Review of “Something Other Than God”

Can’t understand why Catholic Church embraced this book. I didn’t hear the words “faith” or “believe” which I learned are the cornerstones of Salvation.

Absolutely fantastic

I am recommending this book to every devout Catholic, cultural Catholic, and adamant atheist that I know (or at least, whom the HS directs me to). An incredible autobiography that reminded me, with no exaggeration, of Augustine’s Confessions. Jennifer struggled in an earnest way with nearly every modern impediment to faith, yet God still brought her home, providing an example to thousands if they will just listen to/read the book.

So good

I loved hearing Jen’s story of her conversation to Catholicism, the story of the considerations of a mom encountering some very challenging pregnancy situations while also trying to accept the teachings on contraception were so important in this culture and am so amazed at how she arrived at her conclusions. Jen is such a good narrator as well and highly recommend the audible version!

Thank you for sharing your deeply personal journey.

Very inspirational!

I listened to this book over the course of five days. It was riveting and I thought I was listening to a fictional story of a young woman and her journey through life, and it made it all the more meaningful that it was real. Jennifer’s testimony Inspired me to stand up for my faith recently at work and set boundaries against something I didn’t believe in.

This book makes me so proud to be Catholic. This book makes me realize all the grace that I am receiving by being a Catholic and that I am loved.

Thank you Jennifer for writing this book.
