Excellent book

Heart rendering, gives an excellent insight to one woman's plight during the slave era. Hankies at the ready. Would make an excellent film.

Mende is so strong and courageous

Mende thank you for tell your story, I am shocked and disturbed by the evil people that exist in this work. I pray for a day when slavery does not exist. Thank you for using your experience to highlight this awful practice. I pray you have a good life and see your family safe.

Wonderful performance of a tragic story

Like many other people, I watched the film before listening to this audiobook. I was so pleasantly surprised that a good portion of the book is about Mende’s childhood in the Nuba mountains. It was so incredibly fascinating, which made the latter half even sadder. I cannot understand how those people were able to treat other human beings in this way. Mende is a truly strong person, and her actions throughout her story are inspiring. I’m so grateful she shared her story for us all to read.

Shocking

A disturbing account of a young girls enslavement and the brutal and horrific treatment she endured at the hands of the two families who subsequently 'owned' her.

Mende was 12 years old when she was snatched by slavers from her loving family in Sudan. After years of inhuman treatment, she finally ends up working for the family of a diplomat in London. From here she manages to escape and eventally gains asylum.

This raw account should be read as part of the school curriculum, to create awareness of modern day slavery and it's impact on survivors.

Beautifully read - a 'must listen'......

Incredible

I was shocked by this book, particularly as everything happened so recently and it still goes on. It has really opened my eyes to modern-day slavery. This is not to be missed and I strongly recommend everyone to listen to this.

Brutal alert to the terror & horror of human cruel

I found Mende Nazer's book hard to digest , and hard to put down.
I'm done. Mende Nazer's book is emotionally explosive, told with love care and a such incredible detail. I felt the emotions. Her skill at speaking based on her tribes oral traditions coupled with a celebrated British journalist's³ skillful patient commitment to his craft has produced a riveting painfully honest account of cruelty due to race. The fact Mende has survived is the child's stubborn indignation at wrong, and her playful embrace of family, faith and friendships such as she had.
The epilogue outlined the painstaking process by which the book was written. Was a terrific ending.
Seems like she's here in London! I wonder if I can meet her?
