Story
Miguel de Ruyter is a man with a past. Fleeing the 'wolves'—the xenocidal alien machines known as Inhibitors—he has protected his family and community from attack for forty years, sheltering in the caves of an airless, battered world called Michaelmas. The slightest hint of human activity could draw the wolves to their home, to destroy everything...utterly. Which is how Miguel finds himself on a one-way mission with his own destructive mandate: to eliminate a passing ship, before it can bring unwanted attention down on them.

Story
His touch can heal or harm. His fate is solitary. His agony belongs to us all…He was born on a day of pain: November 22, 1963. He came of age in agony: that moment of tragedy when fun-loving rock-and-roll deejay Paul Handler discovered the inexplicable power in his own hands. It is the power to make the wounded whole again. The power to make the lame walk and to heal the sick. It is a power that will sap his soul and plunge him into the world of a famous faith healer. It is a power that can turn to rage, even murder. It is a gift that makes Paul Handler a living, breathing human sacrifice. For thousands of years, a secret cabal has guarded the lineage to which Paul is heir — scapegoats who have been forced to bear humanity's anguish upon themselves. Now, while the cabal searches for him, and one man seeks to destroy him, Paul makes a lonely, frightening journey to the core of his identity and to his destiny … to all the pain his soul can bear, to all the redemption he can give, to the freedom that is death.

Story
When a change in collective conscious sends the Outsiders, a group of aliens, to the shadows below the city, humans reason that the demonetization of their peers is simply more “humane”. There’s no question nor doubt. Just acceptance. Lydia had embraced that sense of “truth” for as long as she can remember. The daughter of a powerful governor, she has been able to live her life with more comforts than most. Comforts can be suffocating, though, and when the opportunity to teach Outsider children in their private, “humane” community becomes available, she takes it.
Summary
In the sixth decade of the 21st century, Earth has been transformed. Nanotechnology has been perfected, giving humans the ability to change their environment and themselves down to the cellular level. And the study of the mind has brought a revolution in human psychotherapy and artificial intelligence. It's a sane and perfect world. Almost.

I really struggled to engage with the story due to the robotic like narration and so I couldn't finish this audio book, I much prefer a more jovial relaxed inflection in the voice.

I expected a novel, not short stories
Would you try another book from Greg Bear and/or Christine Williams?
Yes, Greg Bear is a good writer.
Would you ever listen to anything by Greg Bear again?
Yes.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Christine Williams?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I wish you would separate sci-fi and fantasy. They may be the same for someone who doesn't care for either but fans usually specialize on one or the other.
The publishers summary didn't say this book is a collection of short stories. I would like to be able to search on trilogies (or series) because it provides an opportunity for the author to develop more depth of character and settings.
The audible.com search engine can be approved.
Also, when finishing a book in a series, provide a button to purchase the next book of the series. It's a task to find if there is a next book, if you have it, buy it, ... and this could be an automated process to potentially make things easier for readers and increase sales for audible.
