Summary

La tragedia que fue la Primera Guerra Mundial (solo superada por la hecatombes de la segunda) produjo una cantidad de obras maestras de inclinacion anti-belica, de las cuales una de las mas famosas fue Sin Novedad en el Frente la historia de las batallas a traves de los ojos prosaicos de unos soldados que luchan y matan sin saber por que lo hacen. La idea de que jovenes apenas salidos de la adolescencia tengan que ir al frente y sentir sus horrores, crea lo que llamaron una generacion perdida y las causas de ella desde el punto de vista de quienes efectivamente luchaban es el fondo de esta obra magistral, donde la amargura y la resignacion son caracteristicas fundamentales.

Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful and enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other, if only he can come out of the war alive.
