Summary

1860, Wimborne, Dorset. Rebecca Tullidge, miserably married to her callous husband, is having an affair with a railway officer, John Bedloe. Much to her distress, she trips over her lover's dead body on the railway tracks.

Determined to win votes for the upcoming election of mayor, Mr Feltham calls for Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Lemming to solve the hideous crime, which takes longer than anticipated.

On discovering Bedloe has a town's worth of enemies as well as a sordid past, Colbeck and Leeming must unearth who is capable of plotting a violent murder. And with a pregnant wife at home, Colbeck must work quickly.

Disappointing narration

The story was enjoyable and intriguing and as always there are the usual red herrings. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a nice gentle mystery. Unfortunately although the narrator read the story well, he didn’t employ different voices, which in my opinion spoilt the enjoyment of listening to a story instead of reading it oneself. It is a great shame that there isn’t the same narrator for all the stories in this series.

Good story let down by poor narration

I enjoy the Inspector Colbeck series, but in this instalment I found the narration to be flat and dull. The voice of Sgt Leeming doesn't fit his physical description as being gruff and rough, at one point he seems to pick up a West Country accent when he is supposed to be a Londoner, similarly Supt. Tallis has lost his "bark".
Until the narrator changes I'll stick to the paperbacks.

Far Too Long

I agree with others. I have many audiobooks in this series, which I have enjoyed. However this one spends far, far to much time describing the surroundings, people's clothing, long boring sections on the state of housing or description of a train etc. Whilst we do need these things in this book there is far to much of it and I literally lost the plot. Or nearer the truth didn't care about the plot. Did get to the end but it was hard work. Let's hope he gets back on form with his next book..
