About this listen
Tim Peake, British ESA astronaut
They looked into darkness. The darkness looked back . . .
An utterly gripping story of survival and first contact on a hostile planet from Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Children of Time.
A commercial expedition to a distant star system discovers a pitch-black moon alive with radio activity. Its high-gravity, high-pressure, zero-oxygen environment is deadly to human life, but ripe for exploitation. They named it Shroud.
Under no circumstances can a human survive Shroud’s inhospitable surface – but a catastrophic accident forces Juna Ceelander and Mai Ste Etienne to make an emergency landing in a barely adequate escape vehicle. Alone, and fighting for survival, the two women embark on a gruelling journey across land, sea and air in search of salvation.
But as they travel, Juna and Mai begin to understand Shroud’s unnerving alien species. It also begins to understand them. If they escape Shroud, they’ll somehow have to explain the impossible and translate the incredible. That is, if they make it back at all . . .

‘Crunchy, conceptual SF at its best’ – Richard Morgan, author of Altered Carbon
‘This is hard-edged science fiction that never loses its soul’ – Sue Burke, author of Semiosis
‘Makes Andy Weir's vision of Mars in The Martian look like a Caribbean beach resort’ – The Fantasy Hive

The grand concept of how alien life could be.
This book weaves a story around a future humanity being driven by greed and with zero regard any other life.
I wanted to know and enjoyed the ending which is my personal sign of a story well written and performed.

Tchaikovsky does it again
Take a completely alien world that life could not possibly exist on. Throw away your anthropomorphic prejudices and then imagine how life could evolve there. Then imagine human finding it. That is what Tchaikovsky does brilliantly, yet again. The final sentence completely got me.

Easily one of the best books I've ever listened to
This book is something special. If you liked the Children of Time series, you'd love this book. It's engaging from start to finish, cleverly put together and performed well. This is going on my all time favorite list!

Totally held my attention.
As usual, innovative and entertaining in equal parts. Hopefully more in the pipeline from the shrouded.

What in the hell!!
This man’s mind fascinates and terrifies me in equal measure. How he fabricates a world that no one could ever live, yet imbue it life, wonder and horror is astounding. Great listen, and the narrator is familiar from other great works of his.
All that said, those last lines will haunt me.
Thanks so much for what you do.

Another example of the authors incredible Imagination when it comes to creating new forms of life.
Nicely paced with a good mix of humour, horror and human travails on a planet they really should have stayed away from.

Fantastic!
Excellent plot, more twists and turns than you could reasonably expect to find in a large box of twisty-turny things.
Really excellent, thought-provoking, I was so sorry when it ended.

Great Story
love tense stories like this which takes place with just a few characters. If you like Project Hail Mary, you will enjoy this too.

Both alien and so very human
Another excellent xenofiction story from Adrian Tchaikovsky. Tackles similar concepts like "Service model", The "Final architecture" series" ("Shards of earth") and The "Children of time" series from new angles.
