Summary

On 14 June 2017, a 24-storey block of flats went up in flames.

The fire climbed up cladding as flammable as solid petrol. Fire doors failed to self-close. No alarm rang out to warn sleeping residents. As smoke seeped into their homes, all were told to ‘stay put'. Many did–and they died.

It was a disaster decades in the making.

Peter Apps exposes how a steady stream of deregulation, corporate greed and institutional indifference caused this tragedy. It is the story of a grieving community forsaken by our government, a community still waiting for change.

“However painful the story of Grenfell is, it is one we must hear. Apps' powerful testament tells us how injustice was manifested and how lessons still fail to be learned.”–David Lammy MP

“A staggering achievement, both a testament to the victims, the bereaved and the community of Grenfell and a painstaking, forensic investigation into the causes of the crime itself.”–David Peace, author of the Red Riding Quartet

“Compelling, rigorous, utterly forensic and so very needed. This book has to be the moment that things change.”–Lucy Easthope, author of When the Dust Settles

Emotional rollercoaster of facts

An incredible account of how Grenfell was not only able to happen but destined to, as the husband who’s partner has to use a wheelchair to get around, every person in charge of the health and safety of any blocks of flats, or any social or private rented properties should have to listen to this, and learn the human costs of what their money savings can cause.

It will make you angry

If you hadn’t already guessed the Tory government’s callous disregard for human life is displayed in detail here, although not only to blame, their ideological beliefs were a big reason why Grenfell happened.

Everyone should read this.

An extremely well written account of the event which balanced what happened on the night with how it was permitted to take place through regulatory failure. This was a sobering and impactful book which will stay with me.

A shocking but important read

Very detailed and thought provoking. Details that were not reported in mainstream media. The system needs to change.

A must listen; powerful, emotional and astonishing

A exceptional account and very well narrated. It deeply affected me, as a trained Architectural Technician turned Firefighter it really resonated but I'd challenge anyone not to be moved by the accounts of residents and astounded by the lack of value placed on them by business and government. I hope this helps maintain public focus on ensuring justice prevails.

Powerful and moving

As the years go by I wonder when will the families finally get answers to the most horrific crime in my lifetime, we written and narrated and the final chapter which isn’t short should remind us all that this tragedy should never be forgotten or be allowed to happen again

Incredible, chilling, should be a compulsory listening.

A spectacularly researched and written book.
As an architect I have followed some of this but the detail here was not in the press or enquiry reports.
This book brings humanity to the residents of Grenfell. Something they were not afforded by policy makers and just about everyone else involved.
So many people making ultimately lethal errors, omissions, mistakes, and knowingly creating murderous homes through incompetence, greed, ideology and laziness.
Heartbreaking. A smack in the face wake up call. You must listen to this.
The narrator is also excellent. Listening immerses you in this storey completely.

Essential Listening

A comprehensively researched book detailed the numerous systemic failures that led to such an awful, but wholly preventable, tragedy
