About this listen

Elizabeth was a young widow with two small children when she met Congressman Richard Baker. Handsome and wealthy, with a sparkling public image, Richard seemed like the perfect man to provide the security that Beth and her kids were craving. But when she uncovers a dangerous secret about her new husband, Beth realizes he will go to any lengths - even murder - to keep it. After barely escaping with her life, she and her children flee. They eventually make their way to a secluded estate in the Pennsylvania countryside, where Beth dares to hope she has found a safe place at last....

Forced into retirement by an unexpected injury, Philadelphia homicide detective Jack O’Malley is mourning the loss of his career when his uncle abruptly dies, leaving Jack to dispose of his crumbling country house. Unbeknownst to him, his uncle engaged a caretaker just before his death, a mysterious woman with two children and a beautiful face that haunts his dreams. Determined to know her, Jack begins an investigation into Beth’s past. When he uncovers the shocking truth, and a local woman is viciously murdered, Jack puts his own life on the line to keep Beth and her children safe.

A 2012 International Thriller Award nominee for Best First Novel, She Can Run is a sexy, satisfying debut from award-winning author Melinda Leigh, packed with enough suspense and romance to get even the tamest heart racing!

the book was good, unfortunately spoilt by the narrator, which was awful! Won't listen to another one with the same narrator if I can help it!

enjoyed the book, but not the narrator

This story was engaging and the characters interesting and built to a faced paced ending. I wish I had read it however, as the narrator read the story in a simpering monotone that took away from the story rather than adding i it . In real life I’m sure the lady’s voice is perfectly lovely but I would not choose to listen to her read another book as it was oddly flat and breathy at the same time.

Good story but...

I picked this book up in the £2.99 sale so I was never going to be disappointed. The story wasn’t really anything new and I knew what was coming next but it was enjoyable and saw me through many hours of housework and exercise. My only criticism was the narration which didn’t have sufficient pauses between situations suggesting that the narrator hadn’t really studied the book ahead of recording. This meant that I had to rewind on quite a few occasions to fully understand what was going on. Overall it was enjoyable though.

Easy listening

Good story but the graphic description of the sex was overdone. Perhaps leaving a little more to the imagination would have improved this book.

Too much sex

Enjoyed story difficult to stop listening, carrying the intrigue throughout the story. How could one woman survive such terror.

Good

Brilliant characters. Great storyline. Great narration. I was surprised with the ‘graphic’ content but I guess it did fit with the storyline and Beth’s return to a ‘normal’ life! 🤣

Loved this book!!

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

The books portrays a world full of accepted misogyny and homophobia. It feels very 1960s in many ways.

Has She Can Run put you off other books in this genre?

yes

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Amy Rubinate?

n/a

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from She Can Run?

It is not the scenes - it is the casual misogyny and homophobia I object to

a little too 1950s
