About this listen

The astonishing first volume in Raymond E. Feist’s bestselling Serpentwar series…

Ancient powers are readying themselves for a devastating confrontation, and a dark queen has raised a standard, gathering armies of unmatched might.

A band of desperate men are forced into this battleground of good and evil, and their only hope for survival is to face this ancient power and discover its true nature. Their quest is at best dangerous and at worst suicidal.

Among them are some unlikely heroes: Erik, a bastard heir denied his birthright; his friend Roo, an irrepressible scoundrel with a penchant for thievery; and the mysterious Miranda, upon whom all must wager their lives. She appears to be an ally but also possesses a hidden agenda and may prove to be a more deadly foe when the final confrontation is at hand…

Shadow of a Dark Queen is the first book in the Serpentwar Saga. The quartet continues with the second book, Rise of a Merchant Prince.

A favourite tale of mine

Would you listen to Shadow of a Dark Queen again? Why?

Yes... I read it many years before. It was the first story I read that got me hooked into Feist world. I found the plot interesting surrounding the characters Eric and Roo.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadow of a Dark Queen?

Well, there was a few but the most poignant memorable moment had to be when Eric and Roo facing hanging... They had just watch some others being hung and now it was theirs turn to be hang.

What about Peter Joyce’s performance did you like?

I like his style and the way he portrayed the main characters... It brought the story to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is a story which I enjoyed when I read the book and recently heard the audio version...

Any additional comments?

This was my first book that I read set in the world of Midkemia... I went on to read the others in this series. My most favourite was The Magician. I would recommend not just this book but others. Over the past year I have been hearing the books that I read and for me I have enjoyed them again, Peter Joyce adding to the pleasure.

very good

I loved it. Feels like something big is building, just like in magician. I loved the Kings Buccaneer but this one may have pipped it to the post.

The accents!!

It took a while, but soon enough all the characters had taken on a life of their own. I'm not sure how it would sound to say Americans but hearing well loved characters turn out to be brummies was bloody hilarious!!

Back to Better Story Telling

I found myself to be enjoying this book more than I did the last few (Krondor’s Sons). This story seemed to have me wanting to listen more frequently as I was sucked in like I was for the original Riftwar Saga and then Empire Trilogy.

I look forward to starting the next book in this series later.

The adventure continues!

I highly recommend Raymond E Feist’s books. And the narrator fits these books so so well. Loved that he has given a few characters Brummie/ yam yam type accents in this book since we don’t get a lot of positive representation.

If you’re new to them, I would pick up ‘the magician’ first of all. It’s well worth the read, and its own self-contained story although most are similarly self contained so you can pick them up as you like.

As a trigger warning to some, there are several instances of rape mentioned as there is throughout most of the other books.

This is the start of the serpent wars. We meet and get to know our 2 new young main characters who become the focus of the next few books. We also keep in touch with some wonderful old characters and their kids. The books are feeling a bit darker but still very much enjoying them!

Classic Feist

Must be my 5th time through the series but a new experience to hear someone vocalise the characters. A great way to enjoy these epic stories while keeping your hands free to work.
