Summary
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger.
Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul. But the Duke's steely determination to protect his heart at all costs is challenged by his growing attachment to his lovely and gentle bride. With caring persistence, Persephone attempts to pierce the Duke's armor and reach the man beneath. Yet, he cannot tolerate such exposure, and his repeated rejections take their toll. But when grave danger arises, the Duke realizes he must face the risk of revealing his true feelings or lose the woman he cannot live without.

Such a sweet story
It is always so refreshing to read a new author who can write a clean and charming story and this is rather like beauty and the beast.
If you are looking for a light read and one that will pull at your heart strings, look no further.
Adam, Duke of Kielder, lives in his remote castle in Northumberland. He has a foul temper, is feared by many and has indeed only one friend, Harry. There is a tragic story behind why he is such a lonesome character and why he won't have any visitors to his castle, which is quite understandable.
The crux comes when his estate upon his death will pass a long lost cousin who he doesn't like and decides to find a wife to thwart any attempts by the cousin to succeed to the dukedom.
Enter Persephone who is a delightful character. She is a charming and sweet natured girl who has had to, due to circumstances, run the house, look after her siblings and has never really had a childhood of her own.
Due to the family estate creaking financially, it is seen as a blessing when the Duke offers for her hand with a huge payoff and she goes willingly like a lamb to the slaughter.
It is lovely to watch how this bad tempered and irascible Duke is slowly brought to heel by the charms Persephone.
I thought the writer brought the book to an excellent end by bring all the loose threads together and it was a delightful rendition of the retelling of Hades and Persephone.
The only downside is the insipid narration.

A wonderful Read!
This was a wonderful read indeed! It wasn’t dragging, yet, I dare say I wish it was. I wish it were longer so I could listen to this wonderful story all the while more.
The characters are excellent, and I do get a very beauty and the beast feeling. Though, the story of Persephone and Hades definitely plays a large role here.
I am so happy to say that no R rating scenes occur, as most romantic novels do. It was simple in the best and most lovely ways possible.
If you love old period novels, set in the 1800s, with no big turn of events. A smooth and light hearted story that will be sure to warm your heart....then this story is for you!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and am so glad I purchased it! I will be sure to purchase other novels from this author.

Delightful Adam
Loved the light banter between Adam and his best friend. I laughed out loud with some of their comments. A grumpy Duke who has not felt loved by even his mother and actually felt abandoned, ridiculed by others for his scars and a recluse falls Eventually in love with a quiet, respectful and persistent heroine. Quite a nice story. Even had a villain for added excitement :). Loved the ending, however, I wish this book was a bit longer. Would have loved to have another chapter to read where all comes to an even happier ending with a bit more closure. I do not believe I have ever read a book (even Christian) where not even a kiss was passed between the hero and heroine (until the last 2 minutes of the story that is), but it did not take away from the gloriousness at all. <3

A book I hope to return.
I would never listen to this book a second time and had a hard time getting through it the first go-round. To have an American narrate an English story trying to use an English accent was very off putting. And the story was basically Beauty and the Beast not done very well.
I do not recommend this book.

Perhaps good story but couldn't finish
Was grabbed by the school, but couldn't get past chapter 7. The narrator , although she had a pleasant voice, she could not differentiate among speakers or even thoughts and narration. She also spoke so quickly and without pauses between speaker changes that you could not decide who was saying what to whom. I finally gave up even trying. If it lets me submit the rating with zero stars for the performance I will do so. If it requires me to put something in I regret I will have to put one instead of none.
This really emphasizes the fact that a good narration is critical when a book is done in audio fashion. Sadly I will return this book and any book with this narrator that I have not read.

MY TAKE
I <3 Adam so much. The Duke is so deep, and there's so much more to him than his crusty surface shows. I love how this story unfolds, with both Adam and Persephone slowly discovering each other, especially with her approach to being friends. I was excited to find it in audiobook--at last--and jumped at the chance to read the story again. The narrator did a decent job with the accents and kept the accents for when people were actually speaking.

Story was good...narration, not so much...
I enjoyed the story - I love characters that are not perfect, (tall, perfect white teeth, pros at everything - yuck!). The narrator was not great at British accents, and seemed to read too fast at times, and emphasize the wrong words. Kind of annoying.

Good story, off-putting narration
I almost returned this selection after listening to the first few minutes due to the narration. Listening to an historical British novel with someone reading in an American accent turned me off. I'm glad I gave it a second chance since I eventually did enjoy the story and was able to ignore the narration. I really enjoy audible books where the narrator's voice either naturally fits the characters or they have the range and talent to adapt their voice to different characters, infusing each with a distinct personality. This narrator was OK for Persephone but too high pitched for the men's voices.

Rough start but hilarious. Worth reading.
At the start there’s a time frame that she could have expanded on but didn’t so you are left wondering with some questions but after chapter 4 it gets better and is hilarious till the end. Love reading even with the few questions I have.
