Summary

A miller found under his wheel.

It's 1194, and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed keeper of the pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his "penance", the shire's first crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston, and the priory that once ruled it.

As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't, and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.

Very enjoyable!

For me, the only thing that lets the series down, is the author’s use of the word ‘gotten’ which is an Americanism bang in the middle of the Norman French, English and Latin. It sends a shiver of annoyance down my spine. The main characters are enjoyable and I like the way the story rolls seamlessly straight on from one book to the next.

Good

Very very slow start andI almost gave up but am glad i didn't as i ended up enyoying enough to buy next book. Its much more Cadfael than Tony Hill, but if your like me and sometimes prefer your crime books to be like a lazy sunday afternoon then this book wont disappoint.

Entertaining and a little bit different

My initial impressions were dubious, as I felt there was a surprising amount of "information dumping" at the start, and the author's writing style does carry on being rather heavy on narrative at times, and some of the dialogue seems awfully long for the "scene" in which it was delivered. However, I was soon engaged by the story, which I enjoyed, and thought the main characters were interesting. Nice touch having one of them being (in modern terms) autistic and obsessive.

Clearly well-researched and the settings "felt" authentic for what I understand the period was like.

Marvellous Mediaeval Mystery

Very clever plot and superb narration. The characters and period are brilliantly drawn. The motive was a real surprise.

Great storytelling

Although the start is slow, it is worth persevering! Great storytelling and an intricate plot. I found the performance less good. The narrator uses some very silly voices for different characters.

Happily surprised

I listen to a lot of books and I was pleasantly engaged with this story. It was well read and the narrative wasn’t contrived but flowed
It’s still a who done it but an enjoyable and superior tale of its kind
