Summary

Welcome to Britain under the New Management! The Prime Minister is an eldritch god of unimaginable power. Crime is plummeting as almost every offense is punishable by death. And everywhere you look, there are people with strange powers, some of which they can control, and some, not so much.

Hyperorganised and formidable, Eve Starkey defeated her boss, the louche magical adept and billionaire Rupert de Montfort Bigge, in a supernatural duel to the death. At least, she has reason to hope he's dead. But though she's now in charge of the Bigge Corporation, she's not free of him yet. Through the fecklessness of her brother Imp, combined with the intricate feudal law of a tiny Channel Island, it would appear that unbeknownst to her, she was married to Bigge - and that proving his death and releasing herself from his arcane bindings will take years and cost millions. Then an emissary of the Prime Minister arrives with an offer that she absolutely can't...well, you know.

This is the final novel in the Laundry Files spin-off trilogy that began with Dead Lies Dreaming and continued with Quantum of Nightmares.

Great fun. I wish it had another five chapters! Can’t wait for the next one.

Another solid entry in a great series.

Really enjoyed the story and the narrator supplied a good performance. My only issue is that the audio is balanced such that parts where the narrator is speaking softly are very difficult to hear while in a car where I predominantly listen to audio books.

Quite annoying narration

Stross is one of my favourite author and I like the Laundry files, But the overemphasized narration ruined this listening:( Sometimes whispering, sometimes too loud... English is not my native language so my fingers attached to the volume control just to understand the text, I even thinking about to stop audible subsription because of this bad narration:(
The story was enjoyable altough the prevoous pieces were better a little bit.

Let down by poor audio reader.

At times the woman reading this book was sinking into pantomime levels of character voice, the story although not the best in the series was ok the rendering of it was let’s say comical at times.
A good book spoiled by amateur audio reader.
Sorry but Audio need to get a grip on who and how books are read and maybe some quality control over these two subjects.
The first books in the series were of far better quality and with a more interesting story line.

A little substandard and terrible narration

As much as I enjoy the Laundry books, this one was the first disappointment. The story is simply too far fetched and the narration from Imogen Church is excessive and off-putting throughout. Less is more in this case.

Good romp

While I really miss the laundry and those characters, not to mention London’s reading, and wish the author hadn’t taken us down such a dark path, I’m still really enjoying these latest instalments

Welcome to your home from home

Eve never should bow down
to a crew of No.2
Or the tang of a tyrant tongue

This was a great book, and (forgive me) more fun than Quantum.
Imogen Church’s narration all the better for not having to do lots of children’s voices.

Great story

If you’ve been following this series then you’re in for a treat as so many plot lines come together. So funny and fast moving. Great job by Imogen Church too in bringing the characters to life!

TERRIBLE narrator!

I really love this series, but the last couple were wrecked by the appalling narrator
