Summary

Our last autumn of innocence. Star-spangled nights. Mist-wreathed woodland. A twisted shape watching coldly from the shadows.

Industrial Lancashire, 1974. The kids in the coal-mining town of Ashburn love the waning of the year. Fancy dress and scary stories for Halloween. Fireworks and treacle toffee on Guy Fawkes Night. And a month after that, snow and the approach of Christmas. But, this particular autumn will be memorable for entirely different reasons. Because, this year, someone is killing the children of Ashburn. Or should that be something?

While police and parents search for a maniac, Stephen Carter and his schoolmates know better. They may be on the cusp of adulthood, but there’s still enough of the youngster left in each of them to recognize the work of an evil supernatural being unique to these deserts of slag heap and coal tips.

A coming of age story from the dark imagination of Sunday Times best-selling crime and horror writer Paul Finch. A must for all fans of It, Stranger Things, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

"A born storyteller." (Peter James, author)

Gripping!

Very enjoyable, once the story gets you in its grips it's hard to escape! There are some unexpected twists, the whole thing is well written.
The narration was good although the voice wasn't my favourite (personal preference), but in the whole a good experience throughout!]

Well that was unexpected

A fantastic little novella which will appeal to all Paul Finch fans I suspect.

The killer came as a bit of a shock, I had never suspected them, so that was a huge plus story is brilliantly told and brilliantly narrated by Mr Patmore.

Please also note that :
I don't think this is actually a young adult book as shown here on audible at time of review, it is on Amazon as mystery/thriller not young adult category and I do not believe it is suitable for 12-14 years olds, and older kids would probably be bored by it.

Update 18-11-20 : I note that the category now seems to have been changed to reflect the correct thriller category which is great.

Good mystery

An exciting mystery story, well narrated. Kept me guessing to the end, and there were lots of edge-of-your-seat moments!

This story is fantastic.

Greg Patmore narrating a Paul Finch book is an absolutely perfect combination.

The story was wonderfully written, powerfully descriptive and with believable characters and emotions.

Narrated in a calm, conversational manner, it evoked feelings of listening to a friend tell me a story from their past. At times I wanted to butt in with questions because the suspense was killing me! But in due time, the story unfolds perfectly.

And what a story he tells! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this wonderful book.
